Il 29 Ottobre 1990, al termine della liturgia delle Lodi Mattutine, sua Eccellenza il Card.Theodore McCarrick, allora Arcivescovo di Newark, firmava il decreto che erigeva canonicamente il nuovo Seminario Redemptoris Mater di Newark. Questa firma giungeva dopo un periodo di nove mesi durante i quali, inizialmente, prima 18 e successivamente 52 seminaristi già vivevano negli States, ospitati presso le abitazioni di fratelli e sorelle delle Comunità neocatecumenali della zona circostante. Dio ha benedetto veramente il Seminario fin dal primo inizio. Mentre si era alla ricerca di un luogo per la costruzione del nuovo seminario Redemptoris Mater di Newark, una grande quantità di benedizioni venne da Dio per l’intercessione di Madre Francesca Cabrini, la prima Santa naturalizzata americana. La casa fu fondata da Santa Francesca Saveria Cabrini dopo il suo arrivo negli Stati Uniti nel 1889. Era stata inviata da Papa Leone XIII per prendersi cura dei bisogni spirituali e fisici dei milioni di immigrati italiani che erano arrivati in America al termine del secolo.
