Rivershack Tavern
"Characterized as New Orleans' most unusual bar, the Rivershack Tavern is known to have been, at various times, a grocery store, a bar, a restaurant, a package liquor store, and a pharmacy. The "shack" was thrust into the national spotlight when old asbestos shingles were removed from the sides of the 100-year-old building. Underneath, miraculously preserved for over half of a century, were large, vibrantly colored, hand-painted advertisements from the 1940s in virtual mint condition!"

Nice little bar with good food. We started with the alligator sausage appetizer. It was very good, but we were a little sad at how little there was for the price. My husband had Chicken Sausage Gumbo daily special and then the Shank U burger. He said that the burger would’ve been good on its own, but the addition of the sausage patty made it perfect. I had the Rusty’s Shrimp Wrap. It was pretty tasty. I was mildly annoyed that it had tomatoes in it though not listed on the menu. I picked it off and was able to finish it otherwise. It was a nice stop on our way back into town.
Quaint tavern with great selection of drinks and beers on tap. Service and the speed at which the food came out was the best I've seen in 3 years. The cheese curds, onion rings, and pastrami sandwich were very tasty. We will return.
Great little gem off the beaten path. Was impressed with absolutely everything about this place. Even ordered something different from the menu and didn't get any back talk about "we can't do that" or "there will be an upcharge" which I could care less about. Great service, great food, great beer choices and great atmosphere.
Try Rusty’s Shrimp Wrap! You won’t be disappointed. There is a great selection of beers to choose from and they are served in cold pint glasses or pitchers. The service was excellent. I ventured inside to view the infamous barstools, but chose to sit outside to enjoy the beautiful weather.
Rivershack has a small but delicious menu. Medium prices. Variety of dressed burgers x3 with fries are $12. Had apprizer for $12 which was 9 large chicken wing sections. Pitcher of Abita beer x2 is $16 so lunch with tip for 3 people came to $113.00
First time back in 25 years. I use to go here once a week with a group of runners. I miss my friends but this place is so much better now without them. Kidding. The food was great and Hailey B. is the best. Give that girl a raise.
Service was an 11...Food a 5... Atmosphere an 8. Overall good experience. About an 8 avg. Very dog-friendly. Some of the dog owners are a$$clowns, so be careful with your own animal.
Food was good, service sucked! Took over an hour to get check. We told waitress before placing orders there was 1 couple & everyone else was single. She got couple bill correct, but divided rest of bill by number of people eating, not by order.
I am only giving 4 stars because they can get overwhelmed with business. They could use more staff during busy times but this is probably not there fault considering how hard it is to find help. Also, there have been consistency issues in the kitchen but that can also be explained by staffing issues. Other than that, this place is fantastic and fun. Food is incredible. Many healthy options and you can still feel like you had a treat. My favorite appetizer is the boudin egg rolls and I don't usual like boudin. It is a must try. Wide selection of beer, wine, liquor. Great music.
Rivers back Tavern is a hidden gem embedded in a small neighborhood in New Orleans. Our waitress Tina was a doll, she is the best. She was so helpful and efficient. The food was local fare and it was all delicious! We had the crawfish bites appetizer and it was crunchy, mildly spicy, and yummy. We ordered the ribeye steak with mashed potatoes and a cup of gumbo and my husband got the etouffe. Others in our party ordered the alligator sausage po boy, the bowl of etouffe, and the fried shrimp and fries. Everything was excellent!! I highly recommend you try the Rivershack Tavern!
