Royal Oak Taphouse

Story

The 4 generation family owned ROYAL OAK TAP HOUSE has been serving the Royal Oak area since 1928. The journey began in the early 1900’s when James Koutas came over from Greece to help work on the railroads, but then decided to open a small restaurant instead. He called it Jim's Coney Island, and ran it with his wife, Angeline and children, Sam and Mary. This gem stayed open until 1961. James’ daughter, Mary then wed Jim Pallis in 1962. Jim was also a Greek immigrant who decided to reopen the restaurant in 1965 (this time as the Busy Oak at 507 S Washington). It ran successfully until the mid 80’s. The Pallis family also opened Jimi’s Coney Island in 1983 at 714 S Washington. Jim, Mary, and their 4 children, Frank, Sam, Angie, and Sofia were a large part of the Royal Oak Community. In 1986, however, tragedy struck and Jim Pallis passed away unexpectedly, but that didn’t end the Pallis legacy as Royal Oak restaurateurs. Over the years, Jimi's stayed open and underwent different venues from Coney Island to Family Restaurant to Banquet Center, and finally…ROYAL OAK TAPHOUSE!

The food was absolutely horrible, way better when it was Coney. Greek salad dressing tasted different, Rattlesnake pasta cold and watery, fish was decent, traditional wings tasted funny, chicken lemon rice way too thick n bland and no kids menu had to order a full order of tenders $9 got it with runny, watery ranch. Service was decent and nice craft beer selection. $78 was way too much for this quality of food...I won't be returning. 😞

Remodel is nice. Now you need to revamp your cooking staff. Food was mediocre at best. There are better places to go to in downtown Royal Oak.

Service is really all this place can offer. Our waitress was truly great. Sadly, though, the food and drinks were mediocre at best and over priced. We were foolishly taken in by the "Frozen Cocktails" sign outside. We, wrongly, assumed this was going to be a bar & grill type place based on the signs. It was instead just a family-style Denny's - but worse tasting food. Two frozen drinks & two salads = $42 bucks (with tip). Ouch! Way too much for the quality, ambiance, etc. With so many options on this block and nearby, we definitely wouldn't come back.

This post is a week late. The hambuger was bland. The prices on the menu didn't match the price on the bill. +1 for egg on the menu, but the bill was +2.79. The plates they brought us for the appetizer was still wet, and the bottom plate on the stack was still dirty. The one of the knives had dried lettuce on it. Member of my party asked for no-bun for their burger, so they neglected to put the sauce on it too.
