Decided to treat myself for Mother's Day lunch here, but seems like only one person was cooking, and one person was waiting tables and handling the register. My food was fresh, but they were so late preparing the Oxtails I ended up leaving them. I thought jerk wings would have a rub on them, but these are glazed. And they didn't take the cake from the freezer so I had an icy slice of Red Velvet Cake. Friendly waitress.
Ruthie's put more than enough food on your plate. The food was hot when delivered and tasty. We had the jerk chicken, ox tails, red beans and rice, roti, and plantains. We enjoyed everything except the red beans and rice - I'm not Caribbean so I make my red beans and rice different. Be aware, if you are dining in be prepared to wait. For one person doing everything, the staff was intentional in being personable... which made for an extended wait time when she was with other customers. Overall good food and service and we will be back again.
Ruthie is very nice and her food is very delicious. I make large orders for family events, Everyone always says the food is so good and wants to know where it came from. It’s from here. Plantain, sweet potato, rice and beans, mixed vegetables, dark shrimp, mac & cheese, salmon. Everything is good. Sea moss great too. Kid-friendliness: My kids love it. Dietary restrictions: Some of our folks are vegan they love it. Some of our folks are not, they love it.
I can’t believe I paid $25 on Uber eats for this mediocre food . THIS IS NOT JAMAICAN food !! The curry wings Salty to the point it’s unbearable to eat . The beans and rice no taste only thing that would pass was the Baked Mac .
super friendly. Easily the best carribean food around not a lot of competition, but that doesnt diminish the experience. the vibe in the restaurant is awesome. the owner is very knowledgeable, welcoming, and is just an amazing host. you feel like youre in her home. the food is spot on, well priced and mafe with care.
Service extremely slow but young lady was very friendly. Food took forever to come out once it did my jerk chicken I could totally tell was at least a day old and sitting was cold I had to ask for jerk sauce bc chicken had none. Sauce came and it was hot and tasty. But I could not eat the chicken, it was old like day old from the refrigerator and I do not like that taste. Red beans cold & rice was ok after I poured the jerk sauce on it. Cucumber salad was nice, fresh and tasty. Best part of the meal was the beef patty appetizer. My husbands meal was cooked fresh. The Jamaican jerk shrimp and steamed vegetables. Which may be why all mine was so cold with beans & rice Luke warm bc they’d been sitting waiting for his food to be cooked. I left my chicken. Ate some of my beans but all my rice and cucumbers. My husbands vegetables were great and his shrimp was good but a little salty. Anyway, we will not go back. But I do want to express how nice, kind and very helpful the waitress was. She was perfect and doing everything!
First off let me just say that this place is CLEAN, like really clean. The staff was so nice and polite, it's like they have known me for years, the staff was very welcoming. I ordered the house salad, fried plantains and ox tails, my wife ordered lamb stew. The Ox tails were so damn tender and delicious, the flavor was just right. The spices did not over power the dish, it was excellent. My drink was a soursop smoothy. If you have never had a soursop smoothy before, you are missing out on life. My wife's lamb stew was incredible. The meat just fell off the bone. The fried plantains were hella good. The atmosphere was awesome, definitely a place to stay and eat. My wife and I will become a regular at Ruthie's, count on that. Best Caribbean food in the bay. Period.
Friendly and attentive staff. But food was disappointing. Fried plantains appetizer was on the house, due to long wait. I understand long waits, when food is cooked to order.. we appreciated the freebie and plantains came out hot, sweet and were fried well . We ordered the fishcakes which were tasty , but not crispy. House hot sauce was bold and really spicy, jamaican spicy. Good with the fishcakes. We also ordered the chicken roti. Roti was decent, but more potatoes than chicken, and I feel like it was a tortilla not roti. The red beans and rice that came with the entrees was really good. Well seasoned and hit the spot on this cold evening. But the three rating is based on the jerk chicken and the oxtails.. Both were just okay. Oxtails weren't tender and not seasoned how Jamaican oxtails should be. Jerk chicken was jerk-less.. no jerk seasoning and not remotely spicy...
Where do I begin for this 5 star rating. The food in itself would have come very close to a 5, but it was the hospitality that Ruthie offered us that puts it over the top! She treated us like family from the moment she emerged from the kitchen. Especially our son, whom paid extra special attention to by preparing him fresh juices to try...one of her personal favorite things to do she says. He had the Gingerade and Sorrel and both were so refreshing and different than anything we had ever had. The sit down menu is a very scaled down version of the to go and that is only because Ruthie wants to make sure that you are completley satisfied with your dining experience and so dishes that take longer and only served for take out...unless you don't mind the extra wait. We didn't so we tried as much as we could. Our baby boy had the chicken fettucini alfredo not pictured because he started way too fast, lol...not traditional caribbean, but it was delicious! One of the ladies in the kitchen even came out to make sure that he liked everything that was going into the pasta dish..A+ service! My husband ordered the spicy jerk chicken, with the red beans and rice, and mac and cheese again picture not possible lol. I had the oxtails, plantains hubby ate most of them before I could and roasted veggies. We shared a Dal Puri dough stuffed with split peas then deep fried..YUM! and lentil soup also. On top of all that, Ruthie treated us to samples of jerk shrimp my favorite and the pumpkin soup with salt fish. She also served us some extra spicy sauces that my husband couldn't get enough of...he loves a good heat. Everything was bursting flavor and all of the meats were so tender! All in all we spent almost 2 hours there, but not because the food took that long come out. It was the wonderful atmosphere that Ruthie had created with her charming personality and conversations with the people around us that kept us there. We will definitely be back soon...Thanks Ruthie!
Fabulous Caribbean food influenced by West Indies, had Mixed Greens Salad, Fish Cakes, Shrimp Jerk, Salad, and Red Velvet Cake. TIP: Head over on Sat. the 16th of November Mungai’s Wildart will be performing. The space is very tasteful appointed and extremely clean, and stylish even the bathrooms, sleek, spotless, and contemporary.
