Contrary to the other authors, I have a kid at this school, and who was at another school in Abington school district last year. The school is excellent, probably the best elementary school in the District. The letter is a form letter sent out to all parents who have their kids out for 3 days regardless of the school (there are 6 elementary schools in Abington). We received one for our school as well when we took extended leave for a funeral. We called our principal after receiving one and our principal told us not to worry about it it was a required notice. The letter should be written better and I believe was redone for this year based on the feedback. I do agree whomever wrote that letter should get a 1 star review but the School is definitely 5 stars.

I understand children need to be in school but was the letter about student missing 3 days of school to go to the Boston Marathon really necessary? The letter makes our education system look bad as well as this school in general. If I had my son at this school, I would gladly have approved of him missing three days for something as wonderful as seeing the Boston Marathon. Is the principal unpatriotic?

Boo! Hiss! Parents are the ultimate role model and educator or their children and it is to their discretion what they feel is educational for their children. While you pigeonhole the minds of children to fit into square cubicles, outside education rounds them into more sophisticated whole human beings. In light of recent communications, I believe it would behoove you to reexamine your educational policies and their deficiencies, then try to think outside the box.

My kids learned much more on family trips to historic places than they ever could sitting in a classroom. Our school staff wasn't terrified of kids spending time with their parents, they used the opportunity to share with the class that these historic places really exist, they're tangible, and they're waiting for every parent to break this school's rules and bring their kids with to see, feel, learn. I too feel the staff that reprimands any parent for taking their kids on a journey of a lifetime are severely lacking of the judgement we need from anyone handling our children's education. Five Stars to the father for giving his kids the education this Principle and her staff lacks.

Parenting a child is the responsibility of parents. The school board is a parents employee paid by taxes. The principal is just jealous, or feels a need to 'flex his authority muscles'. He should take some communication and diplomacy classes and maybe a valium. Congratulate the kids for their journey, use their adventures to teach the class in group activities based on their experiences. For an educator, mr principal, you sure took an uneducatex approach, and succeeded in nothing but to recieve scorn and criticism from everyone around you, and accross the globe. I will be reposting with your school's number and school district number to all my strangers on fb with a heart felt message to call and voice the discontent we feel.
