Story

The Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex (Complex) is located in the heart of the Sacramento Valley about 90 miles north of the city of Sacramento. The Complex consists of five national wildlife refuges (NWR) and three wildlife management areas (WMA) that comprise over 35,000 acres of wetlands and uplands. In addition, there are over 30,000 acres of conservation easements in the Complex. The Refuges and easements are part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service); they serve as resting and feeding areas for nearly half the migratory birds on the Pacific Flyway.
Hours vary for each refuge. The auto tours/trails on Sacramento NWR, Colusa NWR, and Llano Seco are 1 hour before sunrise to 1 hour after sunset.

Mission

The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

I love being outside!! If you visit the refuge at different times of the year you get the full spectrum of the visiting and resident animals. It is still recovering from the fire they had a few years back but the refuge has a great visitors center. The people who work there are really knowledgeable and really excited about what they do. Visit for the views, visit for the people.

This is a great place to visit and see birds. There are excellent exhibits at the visitor's center. The autotour brings you closer to the birds in their natural habitat. The winter migratory birds increase the Refuge's bird population significantly. Spring has a great diversity of colorful flowers.

One of my favorite refuges. Great auto your route, a few walking paths. Thousands of light geese in the winter. Best time to go is mid afternoon and stay for sunset. The birds take to the air and it can be spectacular.
