I frequent this store on a regular basis. It would benefit from self check out registers. I am sure many locals and visitors would appreciate this feature. My suggestion is to eliminate a few of the displays upfront and put these "self checkout" registers there.
Lines can be a bit long, and this is almost to be expected almost any time of the day.
Employees are pleasant and generally helpful. Some do have a tendency of talking "shop"  or "what not" when stocking, etc. Which is unprofessional, especially in this small town where we tend to know our neighbors a little more intimately. 
They try hard to keep the recycle area clean, but it is often a mess and wreaks of alcohol if you are just walking by. But, again, they try. Its such a tedious task, I am sure.
Yes, there are times when you'll see transients and the homeless mucking about on the benches or pan handling. It has increased two folds in the last three years. 
But, the store is generally stocked (unless its the summer season and tourists are plentiful, then stock is extremely low, especially on the sale items. this includes Safeway's competition Fred Meyer's) and is clean. 
There is a new manager  too, after the long term one Gordon retired. He seems eager to work and get the job done too.

Nice store.  Frequently not competitive with Fred Meyer.  Friday 8 piece fried chicken (dark meat) for $5 is my favorite.

Had a run in with some new manager, I thought she was rude to her co-workers &  For a young manager to gain the respect of the older workers,don't act as though they are beneath you. Imagine walking in their shoes for a few decades. Other than that... great store,they have very kind local people who work there. They always seem to answer all my silly tourist questions

Expensive but great baked goods and meat selection. Love the deli and produce.  Employees must all enjoy working there, very friendly.

Great produce section! Wonderful selection, everything very fresh. Starbucks coffee great as well. Friendly cashiers.
