SAMMY'S PIZZA - EST. 1954

As World War II soldiers returned home from Italy telling tales of their favorite food, the popularity of pizza in the U.S. grew. Sam Perrella, a former miner who owned a small café in Keewatin, picked up on this growing trend. Having connections in Chicago, Sam visited with some pizza makers and returned home with an idea that sparked and gave birth to what is now Sammy’s Pizza.

In October 1954, armed with enthusiasm and their own secret recipes, Sam and wife, Louise, opened the doors of the first Sammy's Pizza restaurant in Hibbing, MN. Today, some 61 years, 14 locations and more than 20 million pizzas later, Sammy's is now in it's fourth generation of pizza makers, who all use Sam’s original recipes.

In 2015, PMQ Pizza Magazine, the pizza industry’s No. 1 publication, inducted Sammy’s into its Pizza Hall of Fame — which pays tribute to popular pizzerias in business for 50 years or longer.

OUR LOCATION

Sammy's in Grand Rapids opened in 1984 and is owned and operated by Tony and Kelly Jerulle. The two grew up near the original Sammy's in Hibbing and quickly became fans. Tony eventually moved to Grand Rapids and got a job managing Sammy's and, after a few years, jumped at the opportunity to purchase the restaurant from Jeff Perrella Sr. Not too long after, Kelly moved to the area and applied to work at the restaurant. You could say the rest is history.

Tony and Kelly, now married, are also part owners of Sammy's Pizza in Hibbing, Waite Park, and West Duluth.

Salad Bar, while a very cramped area, was the only highlight on this dinning experience. It was our Wedding Anniversary and we were in town to celebrate. Sammy's had been recommended by some good friends who said they drive there with out of town friends even though it's over an hr. drive from where we live. So you can imagine was our special date (Anniversary) meal choice. Disappointed is an understatement. Of course we ordered PIZZA. Worst pizza I ever had was my husband's words. I would agree. Even a frozen take home pizza from the store raked higher! Oh, and the gal who waited on us didn't seem to have enough time to stop by our table to see how we were doing. We told her it was our first visit & it was a special date. My review.....Don't spend your 30 + dollars at Sammy's Pizza Place in Grand Rapids MN!

We were in town for the weekend and ordered delivery for dinner on Friday night. We have Sammy's here in Duluth but they don't deliver to our house so we decided to go with something we "knew" would be great. We were very disappointed. We ordered a Grilled chicken fajita salad. They left off the chicken, cheese, and guacamole. Which left me with lettuce, fried onions, and peppers. Don't like tomatoes or olives. So I didn't eat it even though we paid for it. When I checked the menu online to make sure it wasn't a different salad I wanted is when I realized the price for the pizza was different than the price online. Next time in town we will try someplace else for sure! Didn't expect that quality from a Sammy's!

Sammy's is an "Up North" institution as far as thin crust pizza is concerned. Hot, crispy, and delicious, you can't beat the taste of these pies. M-Th lunch buffet is totally worth it if you are hungry and ready to demolish some serious food. If you really like what you get, the frozen pizza's are available for purchase so you can take them home to enjoy. Buy as many as you can fit in the freezer, they are an excellent treat for home! Long live Sammy's!

Ten stars!!! I'm kind of a pizza snob. All pizza is not created equal in my book. This Sammy's Pizza is hands down my favorite Sammy's of all time. My family and I have been known to plan trips around visits to the Grand Rapids Sammy's. Will we drive through Grand Rapids about lunch time or supper time? Well, let's leave earlier or later to hit it just at the right time for a meal. Seriously. We love it that much. The staff is always amazing, friendly and accommodating. The food is always hot and delicious. My favorite part about the pizza is the crisp crust. The toppings are ooey and gooey and delicious, then you bite into that crisp crust and it's kinda super-awesome. 😍 My son loves the hot wings too. We normally order two orders of hot wings: one to eat there and one to go and eat later. They have the text coupon deal too. Every once in a while I get a text that has a coupon to show for a discount. All around I love this Sammy's. The parking is great, the bathrooms are clean, the food is delicious, the staff is amazing. It's the total package.

For those who know Broadway pizza, Sammy's is very much like Broadway. Wonderful thin crust and good service. Stop by the Grand Rapids Sammy's, nice buffet on certain days.
