I came here thinking it was a pot pie shop. Although it was l, they offer so much more than the pie. I, of course, had to get the pot pie. It was no joke tasty. They loaded it up with meat with veggies on the side. The prices are unbeatable, $16 for a homemade pot pie, Mashed potato, veggies, rolls and a fresh pie. If you want an amazing diner to grub at come here. Parking: There are spots behind the restaurant maybe 20 stalls. Kid-friendliness: It's a diner with a kids menu if asked.
I enjoyed the atmosphere, decor, feeling like I was going back in time visiting here. Prices are amazing! The food was good, I do wish it had a little bit more flavor but I have noticed flavors are usually cut back on food at a lot of different restaurants if the clientele is more elder due to health. I got a chicken pot pie dinner which included mashed potatoes, corn, coleslaw and bread roll as well as a pie. My favorite was the coleslaw because it had a lot of flavor as did the macaroni and cheese, the chicken in the pie was also very good. The blueberry pie was okay I just feel the crust itself lacks flavor, I would definitely try another pie in place. Overall though I’d i did like this restaurant, I’d probably try something else on the menu though.
Excellent experience! I tried the Chicken and waffles with bacon and it did not disappoint! It was good. They brought out a cinnamon bun that was HUGE! It's an old school place with cool vibe.Food: 5/5
Good breakfast place. Chicken pot pie is not huge, just one person's portion, but really yummy. The sausage is bigger than the normal size ones. If you join their club 48 hours before your meal, it's $5 off your meal. We didn't know about that till we got there, so it was too late for us. We did get the veteran's discount of 10% though. Banana cream pie is good as well. I like the crust from Nation's banana cream pie better.
Great comfort food with generous portions. It is always a pleasure visiting this long-standing location. Plenty of parking, handicap accessible, clean restrooms, take out area or dine in options. Group area as well. Call ahead to order is convenient.Food: 5/5
First time here. Had the house special, Chicken pot pie, mashed potatoes, corn, slaw, biscuit and dessert for $14.99. Nothing stood out as unique and flavorful as a matter of fact, it was quite bland. Needed to extra salt and pepper just to give it some seasoning. The chicken pot pie was not as good as what I’ve had at Boston Market which is subpar itself. The mash had to be flakes/boxed as had no texture like boiled potatoes that have been mashed. Corn was definitely canned. The ONLY saving grace was the coconut cream pie which was good. Service was average, nothing special. I wouldn’t go back, but at least have it a go.
I’ve been coming to the chicken pie shop since I was in diapers starting at the Hillcrest location in 1984. It is my go to comfort foods and I will continue coming here for the foreseeable future. The food is simple. You’re not coming to a Michelin star restaurant when you come to the Chicken Pie Shop. You’re coming for something comforting, that will make your belly happy, and possibly remind you of your Grandma. It’s perfect food for when you’re sick, which is great because they have take out. My go to meal is the chicken pie dinner. You can’t go wrong with it as it includes a chicken pie, potatoes with tasty gravy, the veggie of the day, coleslaw or apple sauce, AND a slice of pie for dessert. I usually swap out my coleslaw for double potatoes. Sometimes I add a cup of chicken soup or the split pea. Both are winners. Service is speedy when you order the pie dinner. Usually just a couple of minutes turn around from order to delivery. The have the GOOD ice too and the sodas are large for a sit down restaurant. My tip: every day they have a different cream pie. Ask your server which pie it is when you’re ordering your meal. If you prefer the cream pie, order it right then, as they can often sell out by the time you’re ready to order dessert. Same applies to when they have strawberry pie in season. The restaurant is kid friendly, lots of basic food items, and kind of noisy when full, so it covers the sound of your kids. There’s parking right out front on the street on El Cajon Blvd with stair access to the front door. On the east side of the building, on Oregon street, there’s at least one handicap spot, with access to a ramp to the front door. There’s also regular street parking on Oregon and, just beyond the new apartment complex behind/to the south of the restaurant, there is a dedicated parking lot for Chicken Pie Shop customers. They’ve just remodeled the exterior, so now there is more lighting, an updated look, and outdoor dining. Kid-friendliness: I’ve been coming here since I was in diapers and have brought my own kiddo and nephews. The food is simple, which kids love, and they don’t mind a little noise.
What is this magical carbo overload place??? We went here for the first time ever yesterday for lunch and oh my goodness!!!!! Do you ever just sit and drop your jaw open with disbelief at the flavor of a dish????? We did that here when we tried the chicken pot pie. It was so freaking good! We both were so amazed with the down home goodness and real comfort food feeling we had with each and every bite. We tried two dishes, one was the country fried steak which comes with two sides. We opted for two helpings of mashed potatoes. It had gravy and also a home cooked roll that was yummy. The other dish was the Chicken pot pie with two eggs and baconthick cut, hashbrowns. The chicken fried steak dish also included a dessert which we chose peach pie. This was an absolute delight I tell ya!! We can’t load up on this type of food every day, but we will definitely come back for more because it was outstanding!!
San Diego Chicken Pie Shop has amazing Pies! I highly recommend coming here this place is fabulous!!! Sometimes there are very slow tho amd also are closed on mondays... The food is very good and hot everytime tho!! I love coming here but the parking can definitely be a pain in the butt! Parking: Not much parking in the street Kid-friendliness: Very kid friendly
I finally made my way in here after many years of passing by it and I was not disappointed. I ordered "the neighborhood grind" and a "half BLTA sandwich with soup". The neighborhood grind comes with a chicken pot pie topped with gravy I had sausage gravy and 2 eggs I had Sunnyside up eggs on the pot pie. A serving of hashbrowns. 3 slices of Bacon or 2 pieces of sausage I had 2 bacon strips and 2 sausage links. Needless to say I enjoyed my meal. The sausage gravy and the egg on top of the pot pie really hit that home made feel spot. The bacon was thick cut and the sausage was cooked really well. Looks are deceiving. The BLTA sandwich is what you would expect Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, and Avocado. Tucked in between bread. The soup was good but a little salty for my taste but nevertheless less good. We got lucky with this order, the kitchen gave us a full sandwich and a additional side of fries by mistake. Took the other half home but ate the fries. The fries were coated very nicely. All in all the experience was nice and I would definetly come back again and try out other items on their menu.
