The train car driving area thing they have is pretty cool. You can ring their bells and rotate the display on the front. The museum is pretty small; they don't have any life size historical train cars inside or outside
This museum is tinyyyy the gift shop is probably bigger than the museum, but interesting given the rich rail culture of SF. There's also a model railcar that's pretty cool for pictures .
Lovely little place! Very knowledgeable and passionate docents, wall to wall information, and incredibly well thought out gifts - like magnets with streetcar liveries over the years. Stop by and get your favorite - I did, and now 1051 lives on my fridge!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
After riding the rail car for the first time I was hooked, needing some more information on the history of transit for the San Francisco region I stopped by the railway museum. I was immersed in a concentrated treasure trove knowledge not only regarding the railway system in San Francisco but also got some tid bits of information about the old Detroit railway which was really cool seeing something from home when you’re 2,000 miles away. The two lady’s that were running the museum are so passionate in what they do and it shows. I wish I could’ve asked the other lady what her name was but SUPER informative and Rose who gave me a pretty in depth history lesson. Not only are they interested in showing San Francisco’s history but those running the railway museum are so adamant on the preservation of it. If you are interested in history of any kind and have at least 15 minutes then I’d say it’s imperative that you come see this place.
Though compact this place is full on stories of the history of railway transportation in San Francisco. The exhibits, pictures, and miniatures were very detailed and had me absorbed for quite awhile.
A little place packed with a lot of history. The entire staff was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Free admission!
Friendly staff nice selection of gifts, Museum small but informative. Streetcar/Tramway fans will love this place. A must for the visitor to SF
It is just a souvenir shop… I went there at 12 pm last Wednesday only to find it was close. The so-called museum is very small and you can see it through.
While this place is quite small, what is here is very interesting to look at. The day I visited, the gentleman who was working was extremely kind and helpful! He took the time to give me more information about each of the exhibits and answered each of my questions. In addition to the fun exhibits, this is also a fantastic place to get information about San Francisco’s transportation system. The man working helped me map out my day with the available buses and cable cars. It was very helpful!
Friendly employees were happy to share knowledge of local transportation. Fun photo opportunity, nice displays. Quick spot to check out, and good for kids.
