I found my life-long best friend here, I can’t thank them enough, I am eternally grateful.

The director, Eric Anderson, is the worst thing for this shelter. He's barely ever there(yet pulls a HUGE salary), is the one person there who cares the least about the animals, & abuses his power to do "favors" for his friends & political associates. He retired a long time ago, but collects his giant paycheck on our dime. He also cusses out customers & volunteers behind their backs. None of the employees respect or even like him, but they definitely fear him. Most of the employees care for the animals quite a bit, & they get a bad rap from the local community. They do the best they can, given the dilapidated facilities & poor leadership that they have to endure. Kennel staff, especially the manager, can DEFINITELY use some customer service training, as they can often be moody & rude. The volunteers can overstep their boundries sometimes, but really are the lifeblood of caring for these animals. This county NEEDS the new facility that's being proposed, but replacing the director with someone who wants to actually do the job can go a long way.

I'm so disappointed after visiting this place twice. They clearly do not take very good care of the animals, cages full of poo. The cats are heartbreaking. There was a sickness going around, and the 2 older ladies didn't even care that 1 kitten had blood coming from his nose, had sneezed and sprayed blood all over the walls, i mentioned it and one of them said "Oh He's fine". He obviously wasnt. There is a cat there right now, picked up for cruelty, and she's filthy. They haven't bothered to do anything for her! It wouldn't hurt then to give the poor girl a bath and medical care to get her adoption ready. These people pretend to care, but it's obvious they just don't. Heartbreaking.

After looking for months for a second dog, we found our new family member here. A nice bonus is you get a voucher for a free first vet visit, which includes most vets around the county, and several coupons for discounts at Farm Supply/Lemos and some others. The minimal shelter staff and volunteers do their best, but it's busy with animal needs and you are mostly on your own while wandering through, so you need to be aware of what your looking for and not be in need of being "sold on" an animal. There is help though, just come with some time on your hands and take it slow. This isnt a wonderful place to work, remember when reading about any "attitudes" that if it wasnt for their love of the animals they wouldnt be here. The ones responsible for the old condition of the facility and animal holdings are the slo county BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, not the staff or volunteers. For way too long they just won't properly fund the operations. They are the ones to complain to, the shelter needs major funding now, and the idea of a new facility needs to be made their priority. Please contact all of them and help get a move on with this!!

We adopted a kitten...and the staff were very helpful, answered the phone promptly and a delight. Since our kitten was too young for neutering, we scheduled a follow-up visit several months later and the drop off and pickup were quick and easy. Couldn't ask for better service.
