Story

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office took over the responsibilities of Animal Control from the County Government on Oct.1, 1994. The name "Animal Control" was changed to "Animal Services" due to the many services provided to all of Sarasota County.

Animal Service Officers respond to calls for service, including nuisance complaints, animal bites, injured animals and animal cruelty.

Lost and Found

Our goal is to help reunite lost animals with their families. We keep a list of animals that are reported missing and those that are found in hopes of making a match. We recommend that pets be microchipped as a means of secondary identification. To make it easier for your pets to be returned should they get lost, be certain to keep current identification tags on them at all times. If you have lost an animal and wish to report this, please contact animal services at: (941) 861-9501. Leave a message if you get an answering machine; we do check it regularly and including weekends & Holidays. Please leave the following information: animal type/description, name of the animal, last seen location, your name, address, contact information. Please remember to follow up with us if we call you back and reach your answering machine or voicemail.

Adoptions

The goal of our adoption program is to help place the stray and unwanted pets brought into our facility. Each dog or cat is given an overall health exam by one of our Animal Care Technicians. The adoption fee for dogs/puppies is $70. The fee for cats/kittens is $60. This fee includes neutering or spaying (FSS 823.15, requires that any dog or cat adopted from an animal shelter must be surgically sterilized), a rabies vaccination and county license for the first year, and dogs are AVID micro chipped for identification.

Animal Services has no maximum holding period for an adoptable animal. The length of time an animal is kept depends on how well the animal handles being kenneled. These evaluations are done on an individual basis and the determination of how long to keep an animal is based on observations made by the Animal Care Technicians.

On occasion we have other animals for adoption, such as birds, ferrets and rabbits. For information on these animals contact the Animal Services Center at (941) 861-9500.

By using this page, you agree to be polite and considerate of others. This page is solely for the purpose of promoting our adoptable animals and answering general inquiries. We respectfully ask that you keep this in mind while posting. Off topic, profane, inflammatory and disrespectful posts will be removed, the user will recieve a warning and if further misuse occurs, we will not hesitate to block the user.

This office would rather have animals living in cages, rather than a loving home, most of the office staff have zero personality, they hang up the phone on people , the supervisors make decisions without even calling or asking questions to at least base their decisions on facts. Almost every person we have dealt with at this office should be fired.

This shelter is infested with ticks if I could post pictures I would picked my dog up from them early the 26th and found a tick on him pulled it off when I got him home then had to go to work. When I got home from work I gave him a bath and pulled over 100 TICKS OFF MY DOG! IT TOOK ME OVER 4 HRS TO GET THEM ALL AND I'M STILL NOT EVEN SURE I GOT THEM ALL! I'm going to have to go back overy him again when I get off today!

About 7 years ago, a family member passed away and I was out of town. The Sheriff's Department impounded the three dogs that I had at that time. All three were traumatized. As I alone could only care for one pet, I gave one to the deceased family member's son, one to a friend, and kept one. She would not let me even touch her for six months. She is now my best friend in the world, but it took months to repair the damage done there. Take your pet anywhere else. Get your pet elsewhere. Government agency; need I say more? In addition, a family members tried to adopt a cat there, and despite the fact that one of them WAS a volunteer, and approved, the approval was revoked upon arrival. STAY AWAY.

I love this place, I have lived in Sarasota my entire life, and I've gotten several pets from there I love the volunteers they care about the animals so much and all of the animals I've gotten from there are amazing. Please don't let the negative comments on the staff affect your decision on rescuing an animal, I assure you they love the animals very much even if they're not great with people. I promise you won't regret adopting an animal from here.
