It was worth the effort.  Schonchin rises pretty dramatically and gives a spectacular view in all directions, hence the choice for a tower point.  The hike is very achievable by people in good health, though it's not for everyone.  Good workout ahead of you, but the scenery and the vantage point is amazing.  Mt McLoughlin, Mt Shasta, and many many others are easy to see on a beautiful sunny day as we we're blessed with today.  Take your time. Enjoy the various plants, trees, vegetation, and natural beauty of the trek.

My favorite lookout, but I'm biased having worked here for four summers. The lookout is quiet, and the views are spectacular, particularly of Mt. Shasta and the Medicine Lake Shield Volcano, the most massive volcano in the Cascades. If you visit in the summer, a ranger may invite you in for a tour and for the Junior Lookout program. The trail itself, which goes though ancient junipers, is quite beautiful.

There is a marked parking lot with a pit toilet at the bottom.  It is 0.7 miles to the top with benches at rest points.  It is steep but with the rest benches you can take your time.  Well worth the hike up. (1.4 miles round trip)
