Our family has been "dentisting" with Dr. Schumacher and staff since he came to the west side of Iowa City. I have been to many dentists over the years (and had two in my family); I've had no complaints about anyone in the past, but Dr. Schumacher is the best in my opinion. His hands are knowledgeable and gentle. He is very caring and personable. He is always to the point, but we also appreciate his great sense of humor. The hygienist is great, and Cindy at the front desk is very pleasant and helpful. I highly recommend this dental clinic. I'm not getting, nor do I expect a discount, for my favorable review (ha ha).

This is more than a job for Dr. Schumacher, which is refreshing to find in a dentist. Aside from being a great dentist to me and my husband anyway, Dr. Schumacher took time outside of his normal hours (and out of his pocket) to fit a mouth guard for my husband who has PTSD from his deployments and grits his teeth at night. He didn't charge us. He cares about his clients personally and you can see that in little, but significant, ways.

He takes Medicaid patients and he and his staff are pleasant and friendly. The quality of care is fine. The only problem I have is with the air quality in the building. It is so heavily perfumed/potpourried in there and I think the reason why is that the air coming in through the vents stinks like sewage. I don't know what's wrong with the building's air quality but my husband is allergic to perfume and I have to shower and wash my clothes after going there. So that's the reason I took off a star to my rating.

Receptionist and hygienist were great. Unfortunately, Dr. Shumacher wasn't. First off, he's kind of an intellectual snob and speaks in a condescending tone to his patients. That's not even the bad part. If he were a good dentist, I could tolerate it. This was my first visit, and after x-rays and an exam he told me I had several cavaties and would need several fillings. I played along but found that hard to believe. I went for another opinion. The second dentist told me I had a couple places he could work on if he were being aggressive, but he'd rather have me come back for my next cleaning in 6 mos and take more X-rays to see how things progress....certainly not several fillings needed immediately! Moral of the story: if your insurance pays for fillings, Dr.Shumacher will find cavities to fill. Or at least that is my experience.
