About

“Promote lifelong learning and appreciation for the marine environment and underwater technology by enhancing science education with hands on learning and conservation.”

Story

In the 1980s, local teacher Clayton Ham brought the then-Seattle-based Marine Science Society to Poulsbo; it was housed at Liberty Bay Marina. In 1990, it moved to its present location in the new building built with a City Bond Issue. However, in 2005, after 15 yrs. of successful operation, a lack of a firm financial footing forced the Center’s closure.

Who Are We Today?
The new Center is supported by the newly formed Marine Science Center Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Bill Austin, Bruce Harlow, and a dedicated team of new supporters, almost all volunteers, created today’s Center. Our main focus will be on educating children through various programs, and reaching into our regional schools. Visitors of all ages will learn more about the waters that surround us. We’re slowly finishing the exhibits and collecting animals, and looking for necessary funding.

Very small center, but with several interesting display tanks, a touch tide pool, a video room, and an activity room (with coloring sheets & white boards for drawing) that kept my 5 year old entertained for quite a while. We'll probably add a visit here to our usual family fun routine whenever we visit Poulsbo. I definitely recommend it for kids, especially if they are interested in marine life. But don't expect a big variety of activities or large viewing tanks.

Perfect little space to explore sea life. there is a small touch tank at the entrance, a theatre playing sea life videos and a kids art room. Our little girls love stopping by when we visit Poulsbo.

Fantastic educational facility to take the whole family to explore the local sea life. Great volunteer's and touch tank plus a kids interactive room with coloring, puzzles and toy sea creatures. There is also a nice theater with a films throughout the day.

Run by volunteers and kept afloat by donations, this center has been a favorite in Poulsbo since before it became the Sea Discovery Center. We visited this morning (they open at 11, so we hit up our favorite bakery first) with my two children plus my two year old nephew and it was a blast. Love this place, we're always sure to donate when we visit. Fun and educational is always a winner!

Educational with a twist of fun. Free aquarium, so kids can come again and again. Volunteers are amazingly knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. They conduct field trips for children. Also, as adults, we enjoyed it immensely.
