Seaside Aquarium

Story

The Seaside Aquarium is a privately owned aquarium in Seaside, Oregon, United States. It is one of the oldest aquariums on the West Coast.HistoryThe building where the aquarium is located was built initially as a natatorium in the 1920s, an indoor saltwater public bath, with the water pumped from the Pacific Ocean through a pipe still visible today at the tide line, and then heated. It featured balconies where people could watch others swim in the pool below. A decade later, the Great Depression broke its economic feasibility. The building later served as a salmon rearing facility, and then a place to watch wrestling matches. The aquarium was founded in 1937, making it one of the oldest in the United States. It uses the same pipe that was installed in the 1920s to fill the aquarium tanks.FeaturesThe Seaside Aquarium reports 100 species of marine life including 20-"arm" sea stars, crabs, wolf eels, moray eels, and octopuses. The Seaside Aquarium established the first program to breed harbor seals in captivity and allows visitors the chance to feed its seals.

I never review anything, but really wanted to review this small great aquarium! We stayed nearby for a family vacation with our two kids ages 3 & 6. We decided to visit the aquarium in the a.m. before we checked out. We were all pleasantly surprised with how fun this little aquarium was for our family. Yes it is definitely small, so if you’re looking for a big aquarium experience this is not it. But our whole family enjoyed this aquarium more than the bigger one in Newport. All the exhibits animals are so close and you get to see everything so good here. Feeding the seals and the two very active octopuses were a highlight. We also loved the up close and personal touching portion of the aquarium. We went at 9:30 and we’re so blessed with the place to ourselves. I highly recommend this place to other families of children.

So much to learn here! It's small and privately owned but each tank is carefully curated and there is information on nearly every species, including information on the history of the building itself. My boyfriend and I were lucky enough to visit when an octopus in one of the tanks was very active, which I had never seen before. It was a very special experience! Both employees were also very friendly. At $8.00 a person, it's a pretty fair price. It takes some serious money to take good care of so many big animals. I'd also like to point out some false information in a previous review for here: The pool you can view the seals swimming in seems a little small for the group. There is a HUGE poster next to it that explains how the seals have free access to a larger pool and basking area behind the dividing wall, which is kept out of view in order to give them privacy from visitors. Seems legit. I wouldn't want people ogling at me all day either.

Seals are amazing. You can feed them by throwing fish over a fenced pool area they're in. They are so cute and happy. But this aquarium is so small. So its great for small kids.

Nice aquarium, free parking right outside. Pretty small place, really is just one big room with some neat native animals. Feeding the seals was fun! With a young child, you could expect to stay no more than an hour, likely less time than that.

Don't visit this place, it is the worst aquarium that I have ever been to... It has poorly lit exhibits in a building that hasn't been upgraded in 40 years or more. The place is overpriced at $8 a person and I would not go if it was $1. All of these facts pale in comparison to the miserable tank that they have for multiple, depressed seals to live in. Completely concrete with not much more space than your average bedroom, I felt bad that the $8 I paid would keep this place running. Please don't support this establishment. Go visit a better institution like the Oregon Zoo where our family had a blast.
