The rocket scientist, Werner Von Braun, never came to Sedona, but his brother did and opened Sedona Drive-In Liquors back in the 1970's, perhaps a bit earlier in fact. I met him a few times in 1972 when I explored Sedona for the first time and needed a bottle of good Tequila to impress a south American friend who was visiting town. He seemed quite happy that he had landed in Sedona of all places and was commanding one of the only alcoholic beverage sales establishments in town at a time when grocery store chains and Walgreens didn't carry alcohol.....not that Sedona had either anyway hahahaha....... The main 3-way intersection of Uptown Sedona, called the "Y" until it was turned into a round-about a few years ago, was merely a stop sign back in 1972. Highway 89A was just two lanes wide with dirt shoulders on both sides. A short 300 yards away on Highway 179, people would line up at Sedona Liquor's drive-in window to get their libations for an afternoon picnic in Oak Creek Canyon or possibly for their party later at their Sedona estate. The selection here always tended towards the eclectic and remains so today. Can't find that perfect wine at the local Safeway? Try here and you'll be surprised at the interesting selection of vintage French wines and European imports.Truly, this is one of those unique businesses in small towns that provides the quality that keeps the local residents in bliss.
