Shasta State Historic Park

About

Shasta State Historic Park is open 7 days a week from sunrise to sunset. The Courthouse museum is open Thursday- Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm.

Story

The “Queen City of the Northern Mines,” Shasta State Historic Park was once the picturesque gold mining town of Shasta. In its heyday, the town was the center of commerce and social activity for northern California. To walk the cemeteries, sites and ruins is to look back in time at the daily lives of the merchants, families and miners who once lived and worked here.

Although Shasta State Historic Park is seemingly small (approximately one block in length) of mostly brick building ruins, visiting here is certainly worth a trip. It is located about six miles west of Redding California (before Whiskeytown NRA) and easy to find along Hwy 299. The accompanying museums are fantastic, especially wandering about the historic store that was sold to the California State Park system. It is still intact with its original merchandise. The on-site Ranger certainly helps visitors discover products on the shelves of this old mercantile. The park is a great place to spend an afternoon, learning about one of California’s great historic places

Had a blast going with my husband to pioneer days! They really recreate the era and show what a town in the early century.

Nice spot to stop and stretch our legs, I love reading placards about historical sites so this was right up my alley! We did see very fresh bear scat on the trail above the brick ruins so be aware! Bathrooms were locked in the middle of the day.
