Located in the middle of Sidney, MI, the Sidney General Store has endured a century of change.
The Sidney General Store, originally Petersen’s General Store, was opened in 1904 by Hans and Johanne Petersen. Their son and his wife (Peter and Julia) ran the store initially. It was then passed down to Peter and Julia’s son and daughter-in-law (Donald and Emily). Donald ran the store until his passing in 1980. The store was then transferred to Donald’s daughter and son-in-law (Julie and Erv Hopkins).
Until its purchase by Mark Walters on August 11, 2009, the store had been owned and operated by four generations of Petersens for over one hundred years. Since acquiring the store, Mark has added a bathroom (which the building never contained) and a deli. Mark plans to continue expanding the inventory at the store and adding to the deli menu.
