Sir and Star at the Olema

Story

Sir and Star is a restaurant founded in 2012. It is located in The Olema, a historic restaurant and inn built in 1876. The restaurant is at the corner of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Star Route One in Olema, California. Olema is located in West Marin County 1mi from the Bear Valley portal to the Point Reyes National Seashore. Olema is similar to a one-horse town as it only contains one other restaurant, a lodge, a few bed and breakfast inns, a recreational vehicle (RV) resort with hookups and a campground, a few shops, and the Hindui branch retreat for their Vedanta Society, all within walking distance of the inn.Early daysThe building was constructed by the area's original Spanish land grantee, Rafael Garcia, in 1876 as part of a 9,000acre land grant from Mexico. John Nelson, the stage coach company owner that ran a stage from Olema to San Rafael, won the inn from Felix Garcia, Rafael's son, in a game of chance. The Nelsons owned the inn for three generations thereafter. The inn was a popular place of respite for local workers. The name Olema has significant historical heritage originating from the over 125adjacent Miwok Indian villages. In the Miwok language, Olemaloke roughly translates to "little coyote".During the 1906 San Francisco earthquake the road near the inn was heavily damaged. In 1910 Henry Fielding Reid of the State Earthquake Investigative Commission opined that Olema was the epicenter of the earthquake. This was later disproved, and the epicenter was found to be about 50miles north of San Francisco. The inn survived the earthquake.

I was sadly disappointed by this restaurant, and I had been looking forward to trying it for some time. We sat in the informal dining room as we were not doing the 3 course meal. My halibut was dry, either overcooked or previously frozen? And the serving size was quite small for an al a carte item, it seems they use they same size plates for their entrees as they do their 3 course meals. Quite a rip off for the price. My husband's meal was good, but not hot. A very limited 'wine by the glass' menu. The wine glasses are thick, clunky glass, the kind you'd use at a party because you don't care if they break. Definitely not a fine dining experience.

Overpriced and pretentious. The lamb was way undercooked and the service was lacking for that price range.

This is a wonderful intimate restaurant and luckily we could all squeeze in. It is nice to see a finer dining experience in this tiny remote community. We all opted for the lamb special and it was delicious. Unfortunately, the service was lacking and inconsistent. The food coming out of the kitchen was presented nicely with well-developed flavors. The service on the other hand was thin and needed a lot more refinement. Our waters were promptly filled but when our settings were cleared, it was a toss-up who would get enough back to eat the next course. The staff were determinedly rushed to service the modicum of tables; 1 or 2 more attendants in the room would have been great to bring back the serenity of our meal. They need to work on getting more trained wait staff to service the restaurant to the level of the food and perception. The next time we are this way, I look forward to a more homogeneous experience worthy of the intent.

MUST AGREE WITH THE PREVIOUS REVIEWER. CONTACTED YESSENIA AND WAS PROVIDED WITH THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE IMAGENABLE. SPEND YOUR MONEY AT A PLACE WHERE THE STAFF AND MANAGMENT CARE ABOUT YOU AS A HUMAN. THIS GOES BEYOND A GOOD MEAL OR A ROOM WITH A VIEW.

Great food. How about just sourcing your wines from a 30 mile or 50 mile radius and publicizing that instead of going out of your way to say they are all from Marin? Its kind of obnoxious and does a disservice to pairing options in the name of pure unadulterated hoity-toity.
