This business actually deserves negative stars. I have been going to Smart Cleaners for years now and though I never liked how expensive it was, I put up with it because it was close to home. When I brought pants in for alterations, I accepted that she was too busy to have me try them on and instead I had to wing it with the measurements. I accepted when the alterations on one of those pants disintegrated within a month and had to be redone - which I did not bug her about, I simply paid the full price again. I did not burst out laughing when she charged me $40 to cut some curtains. I overpaid her again and again, even though both her and her husband's pleasantness varies from cold to non-existent. *I* think that I have been a fairly good customer, spending a decent amount every month. But I can't anymore because they ruined my comforter and continued to blame me for it. The Story: I brought my plain old white Damask print comforter in for a cleaning. It's a king size and washing at home was a nightmare. This was the first time I had decided upon a dry cleaning for it. When I picked it up, I was surprised to find it cost $40 to clean (I never could find a price list anywhere). The total bill was $80 (some other items along with it). I brought it home, excited to have a warm blanket again and immediately found a snare in the fabric. It looked as if a bit of it had gotten caught on something like a zipper. There was bunching and a small hole. I was disappointed but thought I could probably live with it - because that's what I did with them let everything go. I opened up the entire comforter to spread it out and was stunned to find a large tear, about 3" long in addition to the other snare hole. As if that was not shocking enough, it had been SEWN (it looked as if a 5 year old had done the sewing, there was no skill used). I could not imagine the gall of tearing an item, then trying to sew it up and THEN not bothering to tell the customer upon picking it up! I was super angry as I was very short on time but I brought the comforter back and showed the owner. He picked at it quietly and then said "oh yes my wife saw this hole and patched it up for you." For me??! I told him that this comforter came in completely hole-free. It's our comforter - it lays on our bed. He argued that it had been damaged before they cleaned so I pointed out the other smaller tear that was bunched and told him that if this that happened prior to cleaning, the bunching wouldn't have been there. It would have been smooth. He said he would talk to his wife and call me the next day. He did that, and told me it would be fixed and we could pick it up on Friday (this was now Wednesday). I explained that I couldn't imagine how it could be fixed, because it wasn't a tear in the seam, it was a ripe/hole in the center of the comforter- the fabric was frayed. He said they would fix it. My husband went to pick it up and saw that they had simply placed a patch on top of hole. She said it was fixed. He argued it was not fixed - It was ruined. He explained that we would expect a refund on the cleaning and then he wanted to know what they would offer to help pay for a new one. She argued and said that her husband, the "owner" would have to talk to him and strangely neither one is ever there when the other is, so more time passed. When my husband finally DID have the chance to discuss this, the owner said that they did not ruin it - insisting still that it came in that way and that it wasn't a big deal because it just goes on a bed! HE SAID THAT. STRAIGHT FACED. In the end, after arguing fruitlessly, our business was not important enough. The owner said it would refund the entire order of $80 - but anything beyond that, we would need to take him to small claims court! My husband reminded him that we could have asked our credit card to refund that money days ago which would have saved us all time. But that's what we got - a year old $180 comforter ruined, with $40 as "severance" and not one apology or any acceptance of responsibility.
