Overall my impression of this facility is 4 stars. The doctors are very knowledgeable and willing to help. The only issues I found were the nursing staff not all just a few bad apples in the mix. If you or a loved one is in need of quality emergency services seek out services with Snowden at Mary Washington Hospital.

0 stars!!!!!! My mother went here and got worse rather than better. They didn't know how to medicate her and they let her come home without her doctor's consent! My mother was "smart" and knew not to say she was having suicidal thoughts so they would let her out, but the nurses should have watched her other behaviors and known she was not well enough to leave. My mother assured my father and I she did not want to hurt herself but the afternoon she came home she committed suicide. I would sue this place if I could. It needs to be shut down. So many hurting people are sent here for a safe haven but it is not. My mother became more depressed because she was forced to share a room with a woman who could not stop cussing and yelling profanities, and her nurses never came when she called. She needed help in the shower because she was shaking so bad from the meds she couldn't move, and she called and yelled for the nurse, who never came. She felt rejected by everyone there because they act like they don't care. They just treat you as another person who's gone mental. That is no way to treat people who need help! If my father had been able to take off from work and stay at home with her, she would have gotten 1,000 times better care even without medical "professionals" present. If your loved are in there, get them out and take them someplace better! And don't believe the nurses there for a minute when they say, "They are ready to go home!"

Refused to use the proper names and pronouns for trans patients in the partial program. Said it was the “law”. These are adolescents who are borderline suicidal, thank god the patient in the program with me was strong enough to brush it off, but I can’t imagine what that could do to a vulnerable trans patient hanging by a thread who came to Snowden as a safe place. One nurse said specifically to a kid that he may “feel he is a boy”, but she will always “see him as a pretty girl”. I guess it’s decent program if you’re cis but I definitely think trans individuals should stay far away.

As psychiatric “emergency hospitals” go, it’s not bad besides the fact you can’t use any tobacco on grounds. I signed myself in for a stay, knew I was probably going to be in there for a week or two (10 days to be exact), and dealt with it. Doctors and nurses are most concerned with getting medication dispensed and ordering tests to ensure a proper diagnosis...from what I remember, there were a few group therapy sessions on the wing, but nobody cared if you showed up and 90% of the time was your own anyway. That being said, you’ll probably want to attend as the only other entertainment includes one TV and a few books in the day room and a small outside courtyard. I was lucky and packed a portable AM/FM radio I could keep and listen to in my room. Only one staff member (an evening assistant nurse) and I didn’t see eye-to-eye. For being institutional cuisine, the food served was excellent and good sized portions — I have had worse meals at some good hotel restaurants! They discharged me, set me up with a P-doc and a decent therapist, and 6 years later I have yet to need a return visit...so that’s a promising sign that my time there did something. They lose a star for not allowing patients to smoke or vape even in the courtyard during my time. Don’t try it...they’ll get angry and possibly boot you out of there! I’m no expert, but I do feel (even as a person who has quit smoking since) that those hospitalized in a mental health crisis shouldn’t just be given a nicotine patch and basically told “good luck”. A large number of the mentally ill smoke, and I assure you 95% or more return to smoking after their stay on a “smoke-free campus” as MWHC calls it.

THIS PLACE IS A JOKE!! My son is there (like right now), and they did not call me once to let me know how he was doing or any plans. I called on Friday(off on weekends) and spoke with his case manager to see how he was, I was told that he was doing good shouldnt be in much longer, he did not have his case file in front of him, but he would call me on Monday. I called and talked to my son and I was informed that he was not given his medication for the 1st day. I called later and spoke with a nurse what was going on, she said that the dr hadnt called in the medication until later and that he had increased my sons dose, WITHOUT my permission!!! Told me that they didnt need my permission to increase something that he was already on. Then my son later called me when he was going to take a shower and informed me that his clothes were missing. I called back and spoke with a nurse and she said they thought the boy that was in the room with my son might have grabbed them by "mistake". This place is a JOKE! My son was at VTCC (Virginia Treatment Center for Children) in Richmond and that place was AMAZING compared to here. It is a drive but I will tell you they kept me informed about EVERYTHING, I was able to stay in a "hospitality" house because I live in the Fredericksburg area. They even pulled a cot in his room(at the hospital) and let me spend the night/day with him!!!!!
