This place was exactly what I needed after moving to the area recently, and the fact that I’ve been missing southern hospitality. Everyone was wonderful and I can’t wait to come back. My server was phenomenal between her positivity and recommendations, and the food did not disappoint. The chicken and waffles was delicious! My partner really enjoyed my peach french toast and I liked it too, but it didn’t suit my personal preference. I ended up eating more of his delicious chicken instead :
I’ve been to NOLA and eaten some of the best shrimp and grits out there but Southern Kin Cookhouse Shrimp and Grits are certainly up there on the list! Grilled cornbread was also great. Visiting from Toronto but I will definitely be back!Food: 5/5
Southern food in New England, sign me up! Definitely a great choice for a taste of the south. The fried chicken was amazing, crispy and perfectly seasoned. The collard greens were pretty good, I wished they used smoked turkey but nonetheless still pretty good. I loved the Mac n cheese, velveeta was a great addition. The grits were more like polenta, not our favorite and that’s what my bf was most excited about. I hated the chai espresso martini lol not my thing I guess but three of us ordered it and wasn’t feeling it. I would definitely recommend though, order the fried chicken plate or chicken and waffles and you won’t go wrong.
Food was really enjoyable, but the service was pretty poor. We ordered grilled cornbread, devilish eggs, crab cake benedict and chicken on toast special. I appreciated the place was not 100% packed and hence we were not rushed with the bill and stuff. However, the service was surprisingly poor.Food: 5/5
Roasted chicken was amazingly delicious! Service and atmosphere were great. Prices are doable. No need to have reservations on week days. Definitely recommended!Food: 5/5
Servers were pleasant and attentive The gumbo was excellent. Ive had better fried chicken. The food was good, but a bit pricey, although the brunch is a great option with good choices.Food: 4/5
I went to the Southern Kin in Assembly, Somerville, MA, for the second time, and wow, what an upgrade in their food since March! Starting with the appetizers, the Devilish Eggs, boasting beet-cured eggs, bacon candy, jalapeno, and beet chips, were an absolute delight--one of my favorites with an easy 9/10 rating! The corn ribs, featuring roasted corn, cashew sour cream, aleppo chili, and toasted pecans, were nothing short of spectacular. My brother declared them the best corn he's ever had, and I wholeheartedly agree--10/10! The mac 'n' cheese, adorned with breadcrumbs, scored an 8/10 for its comforting twist, while the salad, while a tad standard, held its own at 6/10. The Fried Green Tomatoes, topped with crab, grilled corn, cherry pepper salad, and garlic aioli, delivered a tasty experience, although the corn did steal the spotlight a bit--7/10. Moving on to the large plates, the Shrimp n' grits, featuring andouille sausage gravy and cheddar grits, were a symphony of flavors. I especially enjoyed the sausage--7/10. We also tried their alligator tacos and these are so fun to try especially if you are an adventurous foodie like myself-trust me they taste like chicken 8/10 Dessert was a sweet finale, and you can't go wrong with the Chocolate peanut butter and peach pie slices. The chocolate peanut butter stole our hearts, and while the peach pie lacked a bit of fresh peach punch, it was still a delicious treat--8/10. In summary, Southern Kin has truly upped its culinary game, earning a solid 8/10 overall food rating. While affordability and ambiance both received a commendable 7/10, the diverse and flavorful offerings make it a must-visit for those seeking a delightful dining experience!
My group came on a Sunday at 12:30. It wasn’t too crazy in there at that point. I ordered the Cajun shrimp scramble. The jalapeño cream cheese was fantastic. I will say that the eggs were really salty though. The waitress was willing to take it back but I didn’t want to go through the hassle. I also ordered the Mac n cheese — could be cheesier; it was really runny. My friend ordered the cornbread — the butter on it tasted good. A little too dense for me though. Parking: Parking in the garage is free for the first three hours!
The food is alright but not spectacular - not worth a wait but fine if there’s space and you want something hearty. Everything we tried was fine, but just barely. The chicken hash looked promising but the sweet potato chunks in it were undercooked on the inside and cold/crunchy. Likewise, the biscuit in the breakfast sandwich was gummy towards the center and the home fries had way too much onions in it for my personal liking. I’ll probably come back to try some other menu items to give it a fair chance but on my first visit i was fairly disappointed with my high expectations for the food.
Beef and chicken burger plates were HUGE. Chicken was dry and hard to chew. But the fries were to die for. Grilled corn ribs were delicious but it was expensive considering the small portion size. I would have come back here if the chicken was not dry and overcooked. Reservation and getting a table were smooth.Food: 4/5
