About

This archaeological site includes the remains of a village and twelve earthen mounds.

Story

The mounds at Spiro, Oklahoma, are among the most important archaeological remains in the United States. A remarkable assemblage of artifacts from the mounds shows that prehistoric Spiro people created a sophisticated culture which influenced the entire Southeast. There was an extensive trade network, a highly developed religious center, and a political system which controlled the region. Located on a bend in the Arkansas River, the site was a natural gateway between societies to the east and the west, a gateway at which Spiro people exerted their influence. Yet much of the Spiro culture is still a mystery, including the reasons for the decline and abandonment of the site.

One of the most significant archaeological sites in the US, though sadly underfunding has lead to a somewhat rundown condition currently. The staff/volunteers are wonderful. Well worth the trip for anyone interested in archaeology or Native American history.

It's closed until January 2. Regardless of what the info says on the internet, they are closed between Christmas and New Year's. The informational plaques desperately need replacing. The plexiglass is so cracked you can't read the information on several of the plaques.

You'll need to give yourself 2 or 3 hours to do this properly, so maybe bring a picnic or afternoon tea. Sadly not one of the best funded archaeological sites, but still well worth the visit. The staff were very friendly and it's worth just absorbing the place and thinking about what kind of culture built it.

Great little museum, lots of interesting artifacts indoors and we learned a lot about the spiro people :) definitely go inside. As for the trails.. I dont really recommend it for kids, a lot of the trails have mounds where things "used to be" and so there isn't actually much to look out outside. Also, they give you a trail guide which is a printed booklet with numbers that tells you about each marker on the trails. It's got a lot of errors and didn't seem to be printed correctly, so it would be nice to see that fixed next time we visit. Because there is so much trail, you spend the majority of the time there and I feel like you actually interact with very little. This weighed pretty heavy on my personal experience.
