I have eaten at several Spread Bagelry locations and always have great experiences. I was excited when I moved to the neighborhood that there was one in walking distance. However, today I went to the UPenn lovation for the first time and ordered an everything bagel not toasted with cream cheese and it was terrible. The bottom of the bagel was burnt black. I thought it was just the everything spices that got charred in the oven but I even scraped that off and the bagel itself was burnt black. As you can see the top of the bagel was fine, it’s how it should be. It was inedible. I rarely write reviews but this needed one.
The rosemary olive oil bagel was too salty for my taste. Also it was hard as a rock. I never had a Montreal style bagel before so not sure if that’s how they’re supposed to be. I only ate half of it - I did not like it. Veggie cream cheese and pistachio honey cream cheese were really tasty. Iced coffee and iced latte were okay. The price and 30+ minute wait time for two coffees and two bagels with cream cheese was insane to me. If I ever return, big if, I’ll be doing a pick up order.
These guys run a crazy good shop. And it is so worth the small wait in line. The staff has this amazing bagel shop running fantastic. Then to top it off the food is super fresh and GOOD! Love watching the bagels being made and cooked in the wood fired oven.
I eat at Spread fairly regularly since it's close to my job. Out of the two locations I frequent Chestnut and Walnut near University City, this location is remarkably bad at being consistent. For example, today I asked for extra bacon on my sandwich, and instead recieved none. This is a common issue both with their online ordering system and orders at the counter! And only at this location! So if you ask for something else on your sandwich, honestly, it's 50/50 whether you'll get it. There are a few employees here I like to see, but otherwise the rest seem like they aren't paid enough or are overworked enough here to not care about how they serve the food. Also noteworthy is pickup order foof safety. The bagels, if toasted, are hot and then set onto a marble counter which saps the heat right out of them. That's concerning when you have cooked eggs or meat on your sandwich along with any cheese. And the layout of this location leaves their entrance congested with people all the time. But the reason after a few months of buying here I'm finally giving them a two star review is the really remarkable level of mistakes that get made on your order, even when it's just the one sandwich. Ridiculous when the orders are prepaid, and with such long lines for this location, I'm sure almost no one gets any recourse becauce they need to get to work or to class. I'll instead go to 2401 Walnut before I go back here any time soon for my bagel fix.
One of my favorite eatery at the University City. Always bought the Cure with everything bagel and taste of awesomeness hasn’t changed in many years visiting Spread Bagelry. The service is great and once u place ur order, you will be called when it’s ready to takeaway or dine inside. Dining inside or their patio is great and they also have assorted beers night freezer or some drafts on tap. I have enjoyed brunch there many times watching some sports games in the weekend. A must place to visit when in the University City. Cheers
Probably the worst bagel I’ve ever had, and that includes store bought bagels in a bag. The texture was off and floury, and tasted like nothing. It was also toasted when I clearly asked for it not to be, and the small amount of cream cheese just melted into the bagel. The vanilla bean latte with oat milk was watery and bland. I had high hopes because the line was long and the bagels looked good, but ended up not even finishing my food. The staff were nice, but not super quick with the line moving slowly. Spent like $25 between 2 ppl for two bagels and two drinks. Never again
Friendly and quick service. Coffee was delicious and bagels were good. I’m from NJ so Montreal style bagels leave me suspect. Such a beautiful day to sit outside on the patio in front. Loved it!
I ordered a bagel with cream cheese and didn’t specify for it to be toasted but it said toasted on the screen so I asked for not toasted and the cashier changed it. Then when i got my bagel it was toasted anyway, and there were no more cinnamon raisin bagels left so it’s not like I could ask for it to be remade. Service was subpar. The cinnamon raisin bagel was bland and tasted almost just like a plain bagel. They put less cream cheese than the average place, which was disappointing when the bagel with vegan cream cheese was $7. Overall just pretty bad :
The bagels and food are great, but the operation is lacking. It always seems to me like the cashier is overwhelmed or just can’t keep up. I’m not sure, but their staffing levels don’t seem to justify the long waits - something needs to be fixed. A bagel breakfast should be a reasonably “timely” breakfast. Edit - came back to visit for a few days - cashier still a mess - they literally hire the laziest person to run point on orders - txting, sucking on a lollipop during the rush, makes no sense - rest of the crew working hard - always the cash register holding people up
I ordered simple bagel without onion, waited for it 20+ min and received it with onion. After they told that no bafles are left , only onion and choco chips. That ignored me until I started arguing. And only after this made refund. I spend there over 30 min to receive nothing.Food: 1/5
