Saint Dunstan's Episcopal Church is located in downtown Dover, Massachusetts.
Saint Dunstan’s Episcopal Church began in 1965 following a diocesan survey of Episcopalians living in Dover and Sherborn. Endorsed by the then bishop, The Right Reverend Anson Phelps Stokes, plans began to move ahead and worship services started in the summer of 1967. In September of that year, The Reverend Donald Winslow was appointed the supply priest to the newest mission of the diocese. In addition, after discussions with The Dover Church, it was agreed that the mission would rent space from its neighbor.
This agreement solidified an important aspect of our corporate life, taking to heart ecumenical relations in carrying out ministry in and to the community. This practice of maintaining strong ecumenical ties continues to shape and foster our mission and ministry.
In 1969, the mission adopted the name of Saint Dunstan, a tenth-century Archbishop of Canterbury renowned for his love of music, abilities as a silversmith, reformer of liturgy and educator. Throughout the years, music and education have been important to our corporate life and so it is clear, that this patron saint was well chosen. At the 1974 Convention of the Diocese of Massachusetts, Saint Dunstan’s Mission was welcomed into the diocese as a parish.
On the Feast of Epiphany, 1988, The Right Reverend David Johnson consecrated the newly renovated church building. Since that time, we have continued our mission and gathered for worship, educated our members from the youngest to adults, shared the ministry of hospitality to new and old parishioners and friends alike and engaged in the work of outreach ministry in and beyond our community. Saint Dunstan’s continues to provide a strong presence of the Episcopal Church in Dover and Sherborn as well as the surrounding towns. In all that we do and are, we seek to carry out the love of Christ.
