St. Mary is a Roman Catholic church in Greenwich, Connecticut, part of the Diocese of Bridgeport.HistoryThe parish was founded in 1876. Some time thereafter the first St. Mary Church was erected. In 1890 a disastrous fire destroyed the early church along with a number of other buildings in the area.The current stone church was designed in 1900.The parish complex also contains a school and convent both of which were designed by the noted architect Henry C. Pelton, soon to be famous for his contribution to the design of Riverside Church in New York City.The funeral of Adolphus W. Green, the founder of Nabisco (including Oreo biscuits), was held in this church on March 10, 1917.Architectural significanceSt. Mary Church and Rectory are included as significant contributing properties in the Greenwich Avenue Historical District, Greenwich, Connecticut.
