Mission

St. Mary’s Church, Hamilton Village, is the congregation of the Episcopal Church on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. God calls us to be a loving, diverse, and inclusive Christian community working for a world of compassion and justice. In everything we do, we strive to be grounded in worship and prayer. We invite and welcome all God’s people to St. Mary’s in the name of God: Creator, Son, Holy Spirit. We are Episcopalians committed to the full respect for and inclusion of all people in every aspect of our common life and worship. Single or coupled, of every race or ethnicity, every gender, every sexual orientation, every age, every “station” and class, everyone at St. Mary’s is engaged in liturgy, praising, and service God together.

A beautiful church on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, with a mix of students and folks from the neighborhood in the congregation. Musical, with multiple opportunities to worship during the week- Sunday mass with choir year round at 11AM, Tuesday 12:15 low mass and Thursday 8PM sung Compline when the university is in session. I'm partial, since I'm the rector, but I think it's a jewel box of solid liturgy, thoughtful and justice minded individuals, and abundant hospitality. We love to sing and we love to eat!

My home church, too. A welcoming, diverse, inclusive place. Nice combo of local University City residents, students, others committed to social justice.

This used to be a great Anglo Catholic parish, but then some nervous nelly fussy low church types began complaining to the pastor that "they were allergic to incense." Imagine that. So, because two or three mouthy women said they were allergic to incense, all incense was stopped. Imagine that. They stopped a tradition because of a handful of women. Sad. Now the services there are pedestrian and oh so yawn low church. Boring!
