I liked this home much better than Vanderbilt. . . . I thought this mansion was breathtaking. The dining room was exquisite. I visited this home the weekend after Christmas to see the decorations. There wasn't a formal tour -- but people in most rooms to answer any questions -- which is the way I like it. The entry fee was a good price: $8.

This historic site is located atop a grassy hill overlooking the Hudson River and the mansion was built during the Gilded Age (1876 - 1917). The house was transformed into a Beaux-Arts mansion of 65 rooms and 14 bathrooms. Took a guided tour of the inside of the mansion which is always in the process of restoration so not everything in it has recently been restored into mint condition. Anyway, the tour was very enlightening and clearly showed how the very wealthy lived 100+ years ago along the Hudson Valley area.

4/23/14: This was an interesting place to visit and the tour guide, Don, was extremely informative as he led the tour in a fluid manner. It was fascinating to see the level of preservation that was displayed in the house. The most impact aspect was the feeling that these historical figures actually resided there; there was a rawness to it which I appreciated.
