The service here is good. We were seated quickly during a busy evening, and the waitress was nice and attentive. I noticed the waitstaff members repeatedly asking their patrons if they needed anything. The atmosphere seems warm and cosy despite the busy dinner rush. There was a line starting to form after we got in. The foods are not the best or the worst Thai I’ve had. Like they almost hit the spot, but not quite there yet. The Tom Yum soup is flavorful on top, but I notice the flavor becoming lighter at the bottom. The drunken noodles are good, but could be a tad more flavorful. I did enjoy the green curry chicken. The rice comes with an extra $5 charge for a large bowl. And the bill has an automatic 15% tip added. Prices are reasonable for this touristy part of Chicago. Overall, I’d say this is a decent spot to try amongst all the other food options in the area.
Star of Siam Restaurant has been here for ages and is a well known Thai food standby by both locals and area employers catering. We started with Gyo Tod fried wontons which were unique as you usually don’t see shrimp wontons on Thai menus! They were served with in-house made plum sauce and were generously filled. Very good delicious starter to dinner. We ordered Pad Ruam Mit mixed vegetables with chicken although you can have tofu or other meat choices. Also, Panang Nue beef curry which didn’t disappoint. Huge amount of beef in the rich flavorful curry! Both dishes offered generous amounts of tender meat and vibrant flavors. Notables: 1. If you like your dish spicy hot then you need to tell the server or you’ll get your dish served flat tasting in my opinion. 2. Jasmin rice is extra and doesn’t come with your meal but the food was really good quality and generously portioned so it wasn’t a big deal. Restaurant was clean, service was excellent and friendly. Tables and booths are very roomy.
I placed a large catering order for delivery from Star of Siam last week, and it may have been the most seamless and delicious group food ordering experience I have ever had. Incredible value for the amount and variety of food, and they use halal high-quality chicken and beef. Cannot recommend highly enough!Food: 5/5
Visited here on a trip from NYC. I think this was the best Massaman curry I’ve ever had in the US. When you walk in, the setting is very simple. We almost wondered if we were in the right place. Don’t be fooled this place is bomb. We got there at about 7 it was moderately full but by 730 there was a line out the door so locals know what’s up. Portions are very large and easily shareable with a group. There are also plenty of vegan and vegetarian items which makes it easy for our difficult friends lol. I will absolutely come back the next time I am in Chicago. Vegetarian options: Most of the dishes can have protein swapped for vegetables. Dietary restrictions: Plenty of options for vegans, vegetarians, gluten-free, and lactose intolerant. Parking: There is minimal parking on the street Kid-friendliness: It is kid friendly. Wheelchair accessibility: Not wheelchair accessible. There are stair up to the restaurant.
I barely rate places bad, but this time I want to tell You do you don’t waste your time. Miso soup and the salad were two items which were good, although I had to send soup back because it wasn’t hot. Pad see eww noodle was nothing like original dish. Wrong noodle, wrong broccoli, tasteless chicken. Sent back. Ordered salad instead, it didn’t have spice mark on the menu, but I couldn’t breathe after. Overall service wasn’t friendly. Food was below average. That was my only dinner in Chicago I’m sad that it was like this. Raining of this place was 4.1, I would rate it 2 stars overall. And I LOVE THAI FOOD. THIS IS MY FIRST TIME HAVING SUCH A BAD EXPERIENCE IN THSI PLACE FOR OVER 10 years.
My wife and happened to be walking by around dinner time so we stopped in here. We ordered a Mussaman curry with beef and a Singapore noodle with chicken. The Singapore noodle was listed as Southern Thailand style which was interesting to us since we are fans of regular Singapore noodles, so we wanted to try it. It seems like they just used the noodles from a pad Thai for this dish and it was good but I wouldn’t go out of the way to order that again. The Mussaman was really good. A couple things that I noticed about this place was rice doesn’t come with your entree order, that’s a first of any Thai restaurant we have ever been too. It was $3 for a large jasmine rice, not a big deal at all but I still found it strange since most Thai places will bring you a second round of rice for free. I also noticed they didn’t ask what spice level we wanted our food and because of that, we totally forgot to ask for it spicy so both entrees were mildly spicy. These are just a few quirks we noticed about this place but it wouldn’t stop us from dining there again. We will go back and try some other items. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The food was brought to our table a few minutes after we placed our order.
Star of Siam serves basic Thai dishes with large portions and decent prices. Located in an urban warehouse in River North, the restaurant is brightly lit and comfortably casual. The wait staff is friendly and the service is fast. The Pad Thai was predictable, maybe a bit too sweet for my taste. Spicy basil chicken nicely seasoned with loads of sliced peppers.
Absolutely Love the food, service was outstanding, ambulance was amazing with lots of light. Definitely be back every time. Close walking distance of Mag mile.Food: 5/5
My husband and I go to this place sometimes. Portion is pretty big and price is also reasonable. Their crab rangoon is our favorite appetizer, actually it’s mostly cream cheese filling and barely finds crab but always freshly fried, not greasy and served as hot. We both love red chicken curry. Green beef curry is pretty spicy, it was good but my favorite green curry in Chicago area is from Noble Thai in West town.
craving thai food with my family in chicago so we decided to try out star of siam. all other restaurants were super crowded on saturday lunch so we were glad to see there was plenty of seating. interior is nice and well lit. service was friendly. however, food/flavor was definitely underwhelming for me. portions were big and prices were alright, a little steep for the quality. // chicken pad thai $13.25 // big portion with noodles, chicken, peanuts, etc. flavor was off for me for authentic pad thai. definitely really sweet and was missing that fish sauce flavor. // som tum papaya salad $13.25 // this was probably the best dish out of everything. good flavor but was missing a bit of kick that som tum usually has acidity and spice // pad kra-prao fried spicy basil leaves with meat // good portion of meat. however, wayyy too salty for us. we had to cut it with the rice and sweet noodles but was disappointing. // pla-duk pad ped deep fried catfish // smaller portion of fish. again, wayyy too salty for us. even with rice, it was difficult to eat. large jasmine rice for $3. overall, nice ambiance and service but food was too sweet or too salty for us and the flavors were not the most authentic. i personally would not revisit.
