Story

Steak ‘n Shake was founded in February, 1934 in Normal, Illinois. Gus Belt, Steak ‘n Shake’s founder, pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milk shakes. The Steak 'n Shake name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word “steak” stood for STEAKBURGER. The term “shake” stood for hand-dipped MILK SHAKES. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. To prove his point that his burgers were exceptionally prime, he would wheel in a barrel of steaks (including round, sirloin, and T-bones) and grind the meat into burgers right in front of the guests. Hence arose the origin of our famous slogan, “In Sight It Must Be Right.” After 79 years, we are continuing Steak n Shake’s tradition of serving the country’s best, freshest, and tastiest burgers and shakes.

If I could leave 0 stars I would. I grabbed the menus and seated my family. We sat there for 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged we were there. We ordered and it just got worse from there. The cook didn't pay attention to the ticket because he cooked mine wrong. While waiting for my patty melt to get cooked correctly the waitress took my husband's fries, that he was still eating but left a stack of dishes in front of my son. Then I hear the cook say they are out of onions.... AFTER he's finished with my patty melt that comes with onions. I didn't have onions on my patty melt. My son drank my husband's coke because after 3 attempts to get our waitresses attention he still had nothing to drink. They wasted so much food because people kept walking out because the service was that bad !! We will never eat there again.

The service here really is just terrible. I had a coffee the last time I went and I only got a refill because I explicitly asked for one, now, is it really THAT big a deal, no. But I also watched a table sit dirty for 25 minutes, and the restaurant wasn't busy. I am really not that uptight about things, but at the time they had, basically, a 1:1 ratio of waitresses to tables, and everything still took forever. I don't think I've ever enjoyed an experience at a steak and shake, because they always seem to be awful, but this one takes the cake. I was sitting in a booth that allowed me to see the pick up window for the waiters to bring the prepared food out to the tables, and I watched someone's food sit for no less than 10 minutes, and the waitress responsible was out of sight in the back room. Now, I can't say she was doing nothing and maybe they were understaffed in the back so the waitresses needed to fill in there, but I do know my experience wasn't pleasant. The food quality was okay, and when she actually got to the table our waitress was good enough, it just seems like they need better management to motivate the staff better.

If it was an option I give them 0 Stars I've worked there for about 3 weeks and I quit tonight they are an awful business and they should be shut down. When I first started you were supposed to go through 3 to 5 day training I got trained 15 minutes my 1st night and then after that I was told to go waitress so I did not get trained properly I had no idea what I was doing. And this man came in he was a paramedic he ordered a sandwich and he didn't want mushrooms on it and it came with mushrooms the cook accidentally put mushrooms on it so I served it to him he said no I wasn't supposed up mushrooms I said oh I'm so sorry I'll go get it fixed so I went back to the kitchen to try to get it fixed all they did was scrape off the mushrooms and put his sandwich back together and then served it again by law you were supposed to throw that sandwich away and make a new one I am also a minor I'm only 16 years old and as a 16 yr old you can only work till 10 p.m. on a school night well I work till 10 almost every night and one night I work till about 10:30 and that is illegal so here's what they did they went to the office they changed what time I clocked out and changed it back to 10 way they wouldn't get fined for breaking child labor laws. The managers are rude the place is always dirty we're always understaffed it needs to be shut down. I had a table tonight it was like a table with 6 or 7 and my manager was there waitress the manager that was there waitress her name is Summer and she went back to the back sat in her office and never came back out she got them their drinks but then the food came out so I served them their food I refilled their drinks I fix their order because she got it wrong then I went to the kitchen and I made their shakes I'm technically not supposed to make their shakes. But they had been waiting for about an hour and a half so I went back to the back and I made their shakes and then they talk to my other manager and told him what an awful job that summer is and then they tipped me instead of her and I wasn't even there waitress. This Steak and Shake is doing so many things that are illegal and it's nasty this place really needs to be shut down and I'm not trying to be mean I love some of the people that I work with and I love some of my managers but this place needs to be changed someone needs to do something

We ate here a lot when we lived in town. We have been here a few time since we moved, but tonight was our first time in a long while. We walked in to a mostly empty restaurant with mostly dirty tables and a filthy floor. We had 8 in our party. We were waiting to be seated for several minutes when a guy from the kitchen came out to tell us he couldn’t seat us, but would try to find us help. One customer left angry while we were still waiting to be seated. Another customer left and said the food wasn’t that good.  Finally, a waitress asked how many people we had then said she was sorry but there wasn’t a clean table for us. I asked if someone could clean a table. She leaves and a few minutes later another waitress came over and asked how many. She told us there wasn’t a table big enough and she was sorry. I asked if they would rather us go somewhere else. She said, “Well, I can’t say that, but....” She walked off and  a manger in a red shirt came out and asked how many we had and said he’d get someone to clean a table. We were discussing whether we should just leave when another server came out grabbed 8 menus and said to follow her. She threw the menus on a table that had been wiped off, but left the bus tub full of dishes and food sitting on the bench which was covered with ice, pieces of food, and some liquid. We stood there waiting for someone to come finish cleaning the bench off for several minutes. No one EVER came back over. We walked out. Awful experience! Deserves “0” stars!!!

I wish I could give 0 stars as well like many people have already said here. Drive thru is a minimum 30 min wait it seems everytime my wife and I go here. I’m not in the food business, but I guarantee I could run a much better establishment than this without even trying. Maybe they should stop hiring people who have criminal records. I know who lady who works there named Becca who is the best employee there, other than that everyone else is a joke. I normally don’t post reviews, but it’s every damn time I go here there is an issue. Don’t waste your time or money here because I have stopped for sure.
