Story

Steak ‘n Shake was founded in February, 1934 in Normal, Illinois. Gus Belt, Steak ‘n Shake’s founder, pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milk shakes. The Steak 'n Shake name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word “steak” stood for STEAKBURGER. The term “shake” stood for hand-dipped MILK SHAKES. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. To prove his point that his burgers were exceptionally prime, he would wheel in a barrel of steaks (including round, sirloin, and T-bones) and grind the meat into burgers right in front of the guests. Hence arose the origin of our famous slogan, “In Sight It Must Be Right.” After 79 years, we are continuing Steak n Shake’s tradition of serving the country’s best, freshest, and tastiest burgers and shakes.

Literally, the worst service I've ever had anywhere on more than one occasion. You don't get refills and most likely won't get your correct order either. This is not a joke either, this place sucks, blows, stinks and any other way to say it's bad because it's bad. Real bad.

This is without question the worst place to go for food. At one point in time, sure, it was nice and they got things right. But the past four years...

Inside table service is slightly better than "the worst" but still comes up short. Average wait time to even get attention once seated is 18-20 minutes. 

The Drive-Thru and the inside To-Go counter services are awful. My order is never correct; something is invariably missing! This either forces me to waste more time going back for what was wrong or just--pun intended--"eating it" because it becomes too much of a hassle. Drive thru service takes just as long if not longer than inside table service. From placing your order to paying at the window can seriously tap your will to live. 

Now let's talk about what you get versus what you ordered. And I'm just going to focus on my most recent trip here... I ordered for my wife a double cheeseburger with only mayo and a side of cheese fries. I ordered a grilled cheese with cheese fries for my daughter. Somehow they wanted to give me more fries with that as I ordered it. "Fries okay with that?" I reiterated "Cheese fries" and they still said "Yes, but you get a side with the grilled cheese." Okay, whatever. Nothing to drink. Nothing for me--I know better. "Please pull forward." How?! There's a car in front of me and will remain there for another 3 minutes!  Then, slowly, we creep forward, inching towards our destination of "the window," where I have already foreseen that I will pay and receive anything but my complete order. Eighteen minutes after ordering I pay. Thirteen minutes of that was behind the car in front of me at the window who has sent their bag back in twice now. Three more minutes after paying I'm told to have a good night and sent on my merry way. Surely they got it right, I tell myself, especially after the car in front of me  sent their bag back in twice. Surely the staff will be like "Hey guys! We need to pay more attention!" Well shame on me! They were in such a hurry to get me going they forgot my daughter's grilled cheese. Broke her little heart. I suppose the lesson is a good one for both my wife and daughter. My daughter, age 7, gets to learn that life's not fair and that everything eventually sucks. My wife says she won't ever ask me to ever go there again. So life lessons AND no more Steak-n-Shake! Win-win! I advise anyone reading this to never go either. Quality at this place has tanked worse than Brendan Fraser's Hollywood career. Carbondale Steak-n-Shake is awful.

Stephanie the manager was horrible. She did not know the breakfast menu. Over charged on the breakfast bowl then didnt put hashbrowns in the other bowl. Did not offer to fix it. Or apologize for her mistake or offer to refund the over charge. She simply said she is the night time manager. And said i needed to request the hashbrowns with the breakfast bowl. When it clearly says it comes with hashbrowns. Thats like saying you order a combo but if you dont request the fries with the sandwich you dont get the fries. Horrible service.

Good service sometimes other times not but the food quality is pretty consistent.
