We are a non-profit organization, owned by the Steilacoom Tribe and run by volunteers. We are open on Saturdays between 10am-4pm.
The Steilacoom Tribe is a non-Federally recognized Tribe. This means that, unlike other Federally recognized Tribes, the Steilacoom Tribe has no dedicated reservation of its own, receives no financial or other support from the United States or the State of Washington, and has no special rights related to fishing or other potential sources of income for the Tribe. The Steilacoom Tribe, along with many other non-Federally recognized Tribes, continues to fight for Federal Tribal recognition today.
In 1987 the Steilacoom Tribe purchased and began operating a Tribal Cultural Center and Museum in the 1903 Oberlin Congregational Church. That structure is located within the town's 40 block historic district and was placed on the National Register of Historical sites in 1975.
The Museum has an extensive collection of images and objects from the Steilacoom Tribe, as well as other tribes from around the Puget Sound and North America. This includes history, contemporary photographs, jewelry, basketry and more. You can also view our ethnobotanical garden or learn about our traditions and our language.
We also have a gift shop with items made by Steilacoom Tribal members and by Native Americans around North and South America. The shop consists of books, maps, clothing, jewelry and more.
We welcome you! Come visit us on a Saturday between 10am-4pm. You may also set-up a private group tour; during which, for a special price, you can have a tour guide and/or a storyteller from our Tribe. Appointments for Group Tours are available by calling 253-584-6308 on Saturday (or leave us a voicemail) or by sending us an email to [email protected]. Let us know your preferred date, an approximate number of people who will attend, and the best way for us to contact you. We will do our best to accommodate a date/time that works the best for you. We look forward to meeting you!
