Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center

Story

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, also called the Udvar-Hazy Center, is the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (NASM)'s annex at Washington Dulles International Airport in the Chantilly area of Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. It holds numerous exhibits, including the Space Shuttle Discovery and the Enola Gay.The 760,000ft2 facility was made possible by a $65 million gift in October 1999 to the Smithsonian Institution by Steven F. Udvar-Házy, an immigrant from Hungary and co-founder of the International Lease Finance Corporation, an aircraft leasing corporation. The main NASM building, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C, had always contained more artifacts than could be displayed, and most of the collection had been stored, unavailable to visitors, at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility in Silver Hill, Maryland. A substantial addition to the center encompassing restoration, conservation and collection-storage facilities was completed in 2010. Restoration facilities and museum archives were moved from the museum's Garber facility to the new sections of the Udvar-Hazy Center.

Excellent museum. We were very impressed with the many displays of historic airplanes and one of the actual space shuttles. Give this place lots of time, this place is huge! One of the highlights of our trip. My family wants to go back. Excellent gift shop too.. Save some time to shop. We recommend it to everyone

Incredible. Better than the air and space museum in DC. Diverse collection of key aircraft from the early 1900's through 2000 or so, including some big ones like the Concorde, Shuttle, and SR-71. Make sure to do the 1.5 hour guided tour to appreciate and learn the history and facts. Observation tower is cool also as it overlooks Dulles. Entry and all areas are free. Great gift shop too. Can't wait to return!

The Air & Scare was amazing with plenty of activities for varying levels and ages of youth to participate. We would definitely do this again. The only downside was because youth from a military school was directing traffic, other drivers would move the traffic cones blocking off direction and cut out of line to leave a different way, causing mayhem. Some of the smaller kids sitting on curbs or behind cones would almost be hit by vehicles as well. There were not enough adult supervisors in eyesight of these kids.

We watched the movie "Aircraft Carrier, Guardian of the Sea" in 3D IMAX. It was great. Made my wife and I feel much safer because of the job our military is doing. Later we took the free guided tour of the museum. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the history of the artifacts come alive. I can't remember his name but he said that he used to build satellites before he retired. He was excellent! We will be going back when we return to the area.

Such a cool place! We went to both the national air museum and the hazy center in two days. Definitely worth the free price! Even if you know nothing of air and space you'll have a great time here. The Enola Gay, the Concorde, the Blackbird, spaceship Discovery, and so many more famous and important planes. So, so cool.
