About

A peaceful, authentically beautiful getaway for anyone looking for some R&R. Open May through October.

Story

In 1900, Frank D. Stout inherited part of his father’s lumber fortune, moved to Chicago and within a few years was one of the wealthiest men in the country.

In 1903, when his company built a special railway station near the island, Frank Stout moved his family and his servants northward from Chicago for the summer months. Modeled after the famous Adirondack camps, the lodge was built with four-inch thick plank floors and carved beams imported from Germany. Cabins were erected for his children and other buildings included a three-launch boathouse, servant and guest quarters, and a recreation hall.

In 1912, Stout realized that the original design decision to leave the bark on the logs used for construction of his retreat was a mistake - they had become bug infested - so he imported a trainload of cedar logs from Idaho and rebuilt the entire complex as you see it today. In all, it is documented that he spent over $1.5 million - in 1915 dollars - to create his island sanctuary.

Over the years Stout also purchased acreage on the mainland and built the Big Farm and the Tagalong Golf Course which was modeled after the St. Andrews course in Scotland and is still available for play.

We invite you to experience the history, comfort, and charm of this remarkable facility. Stout’s Island Lodge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of Historic Hotels of America.

If I could give this location a better rating I would. We used this location for a corporate meeting retreat for over 70 employees, and I only heard wonderful reviews from everyone throughout the event. Every single staff member that I encountered was incredibly helpful, by far and away past what they needed to be. Whether it was a personal escort to the cabin to hauling luggage back and forth to recommending a wine and helping build the bonfires, each staff member was unmatched in services. Even the chef on the island was amazing. Specifically, if you have a chance to speak with Emily, she is incredibly sweet and funny, and followed up with me to ensure our cabin was absolutely perfect. She didn't seem to mind redirecting me to my lodging every time I got turned around (which happened too many times). Thank you for hosting our gathering, and I sure hope to return soon. Amazing Place!

This is the most relaxing place on Earth! The beauty of the island is second to none. Helpful staff, amazing food and drink, and a summer breeze made my experience PERFECT. I can't wait to come back. Stout's Island is my new summer getaway. PS I recently hung a picture in my office which provides brief minute of stress relief - I would recommend all the guests do this before returning to daily routine.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere, scenery, our room, and all of the staff was very cheerful. The bison steak filet meal was a huge disappointment as well as our wait staff. Had she come back to check on us, I would've sent my plate back. The filet was maybe 3 ounces big, the Rosemary garlic potatoes and carrots were covered in some disgusting sweet current sauce.. It ruined our dinner. We will go back to enjoy the island; but, leave to eat dinner elsewhere.

Lodge was beautiful and ferry over was great. Continental breakfast was a bit skimpy with the room prices being so high. Also on the ferry home they were rough with our luggage and exploded a pop can in our cooler. They also broke the handle on my sisters luggage. Beautiful island resort.
