Sutherlin is located 12 miles north of Roseburg, and is the second largest city in Douglas County. Fendel Sutherlin established the community in 1851 after traveling west to join the California gold rush.
Among several historic landmarks is the two-story Sutherlin Bank Building, which has been at the intersection of State Street and Central Avenue since 1910- a year propr to the city becoming incorporated. The building was built with sandstone hauled to the site from the quarry at Deady Crossing, just south of Sutherlin city limits, where Chinese laborers cut the stone. The bulding is still in use to this day.
Today, our population is currently at 7,880. and the city offers numerous eateries; three motels, RV Parks, an 18-hole golf course and several parks, including a historic locomotive and caboose in Central Park; a recently renovated library and senior center. Just east of the city is the popular boating and recreation destination, Cooper Creek Reservoir. The summer brings our annual Blackberry Festival and Car Cruise, as well as the Sutherlin Stampede Rodeo, the "free" rodeo with a canned food item donated for the local food pantry. The Pacific ocean is an hour away to the west, or 40 minutes south is Seven Feathers Hotel and Casino Resort. We welcome you to Sutherlin, the "Gateway to Recreation"!
