About

A San Francisco Bakery featuring breads by Chad Robertson and pastries by Elisabeth Prueitt

Story

Pastry chef ELISABETH PRUEITT and her husband, renowned baker CHAD ROBERTSON, are the co-owners of Tartine Bakery and Bar Tartine in San Francisco. They both trained at the Culinary Institute of America in New York. Elisabeth and Chad traveled, trained, and cooked in France and upon their return, opened Bay Village Bakery in Point Reyes Station, California. Using a wood fired brick oven, they baked bread and created rustic, elegant pastries using many of the techniques they had learned abroad. Chad’s bread garnered the attention of Alain Ducasse, who wrote about the couple in his book, Harvesting Excellence. After 6 years of baking in the countryside, they relocated to San Francisco to open Tartine Bakery in 2002. Elisabeth was named Pastry Chef of the Year in San Francisco Magazine. Tartine Bakery is continually rated in the Zagat Survey as Best Bakery and Best Breakfast in San Francisco. Elisabeth and Chad were nominated for James Beard Award for Outstanding Pastry Chefs in 2006 and 2007, and won the award in 2008. Their first book, ‘Tartine’, published by Chronicle Books, was chosen by Corby Kummer of the Atlantic Monthly in the New York Times list of selected top ten cookbooks of 2006. It was also nominated for a James Beard award for the photography of France Ruffenach. Tartine Bread, Chad’s second book, published by Chronicle Books is in current release: Fall 2010.

This is more than a neighborhood bakery, or any bakery at that. This place is very, very unique. I highly recommend the Chocolate Croissants. The dough is so buttery and delicious! Trust me this review is only one glimpse at this place, those croissants are too good for words! Best bakery in San Francisco hands down!

Lovely quiche. Buttery pastry, fluffy eggs. Beautiful croissant, crisp and flavorful.. A little too greasy for me though. Coffee was so so.

It is a little hard to find parking in the area, but once you get past that, you will enjoy one of the best bakeries in San Francisco. Their pastries are fresh and their cakes are delicious. There is something for everyone. If you wonder what a real croissant tastes like, try theirs. They also offer caffeinated beverages and sandwiches

Not a fancy place, but really good croissants! Parking was challenging and being from out of town didn't help I'm sure, but we parked about 3 blocks away. We arrived around noon on a Thursday and waited in a line of about 10 people. Wasn't too bad. It took about 10 minutes to get our order. Nothing else can be said that hasn't already been said by other reviewers. We came here by a recommendation from a friend, otherwise we would have never visited. Would I come back if in town...probably not. If I was local, this may be a different story.

Not quite I get this one...people talk about it being like the bakeries in France. It's not even close. The only thing that really stands out is their fresh baked breads. Those are probably some of the best in SF, but you have to get there at 4 ish as they sell out quickly. Everything else is over baked and also over priced for what you're getting.
