Story

Like all sanctuaries, Temple Emanu-El is a visible token of the presence of God in the midst of His people. It sheds a beauty that is the beauty of holiness, and it stands as a beacon light in a tradition that stands as a champion of justice, brotherhood and peace.

Founded in 1845, Temple Emanu-El is the third oldest Reform Jewish congregation in the United States. Its odyssey mirrors that of the Jewish community in New York. Originally located on a remote corner on the Lower East Side, it moved progressively, both geographically and spiritually, further uptown, and is now located in the very heart of New York City, on the Upper East Side.

Mission

A Bold Reform Congregation Where Warmth and Majesty Meet — In keeping with our founding in 1845 as the first Reform Jewish Congregation in New York City, Temple Emanu-El continues to build upon its legacy of leadership and timeless values of Jewish tradition as we strive toward a more just, ethical and compassionate world. We commit our spiritual, intellectual, physical and financial resources to strengthening our community today for a vital tomorrow.

While the synagogue is beautiful, the services are cold, little feeling of being in a Jewish house of worship. I come from the oldest reform Temple west of the Mississippi, but even there, you feel a Jewish connection. We sing our prayers together in Hebrew; we try to partake in the service. Here, I felt the last leg of anything Jewish. As a reform Jew with a history of 4 generations in California, I left here sad; I felt no sense of community, a service so void of anything that touched my heart as a Jew. Take away the magnificent building, to me, it could be any place of worship..... Jewish? unfortunately not.

This is the joint! It's the top mentioned synagogue in tv, in books, etc. Known historically for having many celebrity members such a Barbara Walters, Mike Bloomberg. The services are classic Reform Judaism and you will find that the services on Friday night tend to be short.
