The Compass School

About

We are a Reggio Emilia inspired early childhood school located in Naperville, Illinois serving children aged 6 weeks through 12 years old.

Story

Current research reveals that the human brain has an inborn desire to search for meaning through patterns and relationships. Children and adults learn best in environments that are intellectually and emotionally challenging without fear of ridicule or failure.

At The Compass School we follow a child-led project approach. The project is an investigation of topics and concepts over a period of time. Project work provides the kind of complex experiences rich in challenge, choice and meaning that respects the inquisitive mind of the child and the way children learn. The investigation follows a path created by the questions, interests and imaginations of children in contrast to a predetermined direction planned by the teacher.

The curriculum is a blend of a respectful environment, rich and provocative materials being readily available in the environment, and of teachers supporting the child’s choices of learning.

We highly value communication between the school and family and offer a variety of tools to facilitate continuous interaction including daily logs, highlights, lesson plans, newsletters, weekly take home journals and portfolios of your child's work.

Every detail inside and outside of The Compass School is created with children as the focus. Specialty classrooms are equipped with authentic materials to make the learning experience more “real-life”. A large and varied playground and landscaping are each designed to promote the learning process.

All teachers at The Compass School have experience and/or training in working with children. All teachers have received specialized training in the project approach to learning, the emergent curriculum, the RIE philosophy of infant/toddler interaction, and in The Compass School’s philosophy of promoting respect for children.

Mission

The mission of The Compass School is to provide an environment that integrates discovery and respect for children.

Learning is a journey we make together. To enable each child to optimally benefit from this journey, the vision of The Compass School includes the following goals:
- To respect each child as an individual.
- To help children learn by choosing projects.
- To provide an environment that allows learning to grow as much as the child and teachers’ imagination.
- To support learning as a collaboration (with their teachers, peers, parents and community).
- To offer children consistency and continuity, which, in turn, creates a safe and comfortable environment in which to try new things, increase risk-taking, and foster experimentation.

How do you describe a place where you are secure in the fact that your child is as loved, cared for, and growing as if you were there? Our daughter started at Compass as a shy, quiet, 2-year-old, just two days a week still in diapers and taking naps -- never leaving her blanket and Camel. At 3, she moved up to 3 days a week, and by 4 she was in pre-school never needing the blanket and stuffed toy she used to tote along everywhere, and then the full-day, private kindergarten. Through the potty training, new classroom and teacher adjustments, leaving mommy or daddy, and growing in her independence every six months, it was just fascinating to watch, and see how each teacher helped her along the way. After almost four years at Compass, she's a VERY OUTGOING, confident, inquisitive reader, with friends, a capacity for empathy, and strong amount of trust and love for those teachers who were with her on her journey along the way. I'm confident in her ability to succeed as she transitions to the public school. One of the best decisions we ever made was to choose The Compass School for our daughter. Admittedly, when it comes to child care, you get what you pay for... I do not regret the investment, the education and quality of the staff, the healthy snacks, organic food, no nut policy, fun field trips, and emerging curriculum. Not only has it been great for her, we've become friends with the other families and parents along the way. I can't say enough about these wonderful people and the school itself (and apparently my lengthy review is my attempt to!) We can't leave our Compass family, so we'll be back for the Summer Camps!

I've truly loved my experience with Compass. They are not only amazing with my kids - but with me as a parent as well! Compass has created an amazing environment for children where they flourish and develop into these tiny, well rounded, creative, diverse, confident people. I've made friends with other families and we have noticed the head start our kids have had by attending pre-school at Compass. The teachers are bright, friendly, educated, creative and loving people who imbue these qualities into my children. The Directors (Kathy & Liz) are so smart and compassionate. They do a fantastic job of collaborating with parents to make this entire process stress free. LOVE Compass!!!

I absolutely love the Compass School. My daughter has been in their infant classroom since she was 6 weeks old. I felt (at 6 weeks old) and still feel (at 13 months old) completely comfortable leaving my daughter with the teachers at Compass. They are warm and welcoming, while also being very knowledgeable on what infants need. They create wonderful lesson plans for the classrooms and are always engaging the infants in multiple sensory activities. My daughter has learned so much from being at The Compass School and I highly recommend it.

Our older child started off at a different daycare at three months old but switched to Compass when the other daycare raised tuition 35% after only three months. That was seven years ago and both our children are still enrolled for Compass's after-school program. We have been very happy with Compass. The teachers are great. The children are busy all day and always learning, even at the youngest ages. At the previous daycare infants would sit in bouncy seats or swings. I liked that Compass allowed them to crawl around and that the teachers come down to their level to interact. Both of our children love Compass and their teachers. They are happy to see me at pick up but do not want to leave immediately because they are in the middle of a fun project, book, or game.
