The Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium

Story

Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, also known as Owen Field or The Palace on the Prairie, is the on-campus football facility on the campus of the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, United States, that serves as the home of the Oklahoma Sooners football team. The official seating capacity of the stadium, following renovations in 2015, is 86,112, making it the 23rd largest stadium in the world, the 15th largest college stadium in the United States and the second largest in the Big 12 Conference, behind Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium at the University of Texas at Austin. The stadium is a bowl-shaped facility with its long axis oriented north/south, with both the north and south ends enclosed. The south end has only been enclosed since the 2015-2016 off-season, when it was renovated as part of a $160 million project. Visitor seating is in the south end zone and the southern sections of the east side. The student seating sections are in the east stands, surrounding the 350-member Pride of Oklahoma which sits in section 29, between the 20- and 35-yard lines. The Sooners' bench was once located on the east side with the students, but the home bench was moved to the west side in the mid-1990s.

Best Place on Earth! Super biased, I'm a sooner at heart...however the Palace on the Prairie is a great stadium. The Oklahoma fans are some of the best in the country always treating opponents kindly. Campus corner is must to walk through before kickoff, good food, drinks and amazing atmosphere. They just upgraded the stadium, if you haven't seen the Switzer center you must go...great history about Oklahoma and the University.

Two consecutive national championships in '74 and 75...and others, to answer a previous derogatory post. I was there to see the old press box demolition action, when the charges went off and the box came down to send a shock wave 2 blocks away! Then the renovation of what was once Owen Field commenced. Lots of history and traditions here, most of it good or great. One game I couldn't get tickets for but listened to on the radio, the announcer said if the Sooners can hold them back and keep them from going the yard they need to get a touchdown, you'll hear the crowd roar for miles. Of course, I thought, just an embellishment, right? I mean, I was on the 2nd floor balcony of my apartment off of 24th Ave. SE, and I heard that roar when they held them back...from 2.5 miles away!!

The Palace on the Prairie! Great atmosphere for a football game. Yeah, I know I'm a homer, but it's tough to beat. It helps that the Sooners generally put a good product on the field, but the upgrades that have been made make this a five-star facility.

Home of the Sooners! This is an incredible place to see a football game. No matter the opponent, the stands will be packed and the crowd passionate. Wear cream and crimson and it'll be a great day.
