About

Creativity Begins Downtown

Story

Our studio is a place where we start with mud and make masterpieces, or create beautiful pieces of art with alcohol ink painting, watercolor, glass or a combination of found objects. Our teachers are working artists who also provide instruction to students in small class settings. We inspire children and adults to find where creativity begins for them. Whether you are looking to find a new way to express yourself or want a place to improve your technique, you will find it here at The McKinney Art Studio.
Our Gallery features local artists and several are our teachers and students creating their art right here in our studio. Please come in and find that perfect original gift for someone special today!

This studio has become my haven! Lisa is an incredible teacher, and the community of fellow students has sparked my inspiration and stretched my creativity. There's a variety of classes and the studio is well organized and extraordinarily welcoming. If anyone is interested in exploring pottery, this place is a great art - and heart - home.

I had searched for a Studio like this for over two years! Lisa, owner and instructor is a natural, talented Teacher. Professional instruction in a supportive atmosphere. Pursuing creativity can be a lonely endeavor, pulling yourself up out of a creative rut can be difficult, but it doesn't have to be. Check out This Studio see if it is a match for you, it was for me. .

Lisa is an incredible artist with a wealth of knowledge. She is always smiling and willing to help anyone. Lisa is a great teacher and loves to show students new ideas, help new students find what they are looking for in the world of art as well as letting other artist host workshops at her studio. I have been a student of her's for a long time and have nothing but praise for her. I would recommend her to anyone looking for a fun and enriching art experience!

Lisa Labarge, owner and instructor, of the Art Studio is why it's such a success. From the moment I walked into my first class she's taught me so much about clay and art but more importantly how to find "JOY" again among friends and people sincerely there for you in so many ways. Wander on over and see the window display of our artists, and step on in to feel the energy and magic!

I had taken Lisa's class earlier this year. It was a dreadful experience to begin with and she turned out to be a complete crook. I have lost 100s of $ at her class as even after working for months I did not get my final pieces back. If I could I would give her 0 Stars She claims that she earns her money through real estate so the $120 fee that she charges is for the space you occupy keeping your pottery pieces that you have made rather than for the classes you take. So at any given time, even if you have stopped your class and since the pieces takes 3 to 4 weeks to get full ready with drying, bisque firing, glazing and firing again you will end up paying a month's worth of fees or sometimes more just to get your pieces ready to be taken home. Else she will very ruthlessly tell you that she will be trashing the pieces. What kind of teacher says that?? She has no respect for the art created by her student or the conscience, she has the indecency to throw away the piece as-is (even if the student is ready to take it unfinished stage) rather than give it to the student as a part of fee paid by her student. She told me to pay her $150 or she will throw away all my pieces. Since there were 5 weeks in April she wanted me to pay $150 for just firing my pieces when I did not even attend a single class in April and even though these work were completed in March. She tells me that this (20$ per week fee rather than 120$ for month) was told to me by her at the beginning, however I can show the email as a proof that no such thing was informed to me. Neither that she charges per week nor that I have to pay even if I don’t attend the class. Especially in a scenario where the pieces can take much longer to be ready after you have completed your work. Sometimes she will tell you that the piece will take 3 weeks to dry and then when you come back the next week it will be fired. Since she has turned 60 her memory is flaky and she is very temperamental. One day she will be really nice to you and tell you that you can use the studio at her house to spray paint the pottery piece and the next week she forgets and gives you a hard time for choosing to do that. She has made several rules to mint money out of her students. Example your piece cannot exceed 15inchs in height and if it does she will charge you extra for the same even though her kiln fits 26inches tall piece. She charged me 40$ for Raku firing 3 pieces, then she though it was "unfair" that one of my piece was 12inches tall, and neither did she fire it nor gave me the money and when I reminded her that I have paid for it, she said we will call it even. I don’t know what was even? Unfair is a loosely used word by her for her own selfish money minting scheme from her students. She kept pointing out that I was unfair for practically everything I wanted to do. It felt claustrophobic and an attempt to kill art within you. She is in no way even deserving to be called an artist and very far from an art teacher. She cannot teach Forgets things you have told her. She is temperamental and selective in her behavior. To one student she will keep asking to come and work extra hours if they want and to me she gave me such a hard time when I went for a makeup after taking permission from her (which she forgot very conveniently). She made me buy my own glaze as she thought I would need metallic glaze and when I also bought clay of my own from store instead of buying from her, she told me it doesn’t look like porcelain. Over all it was a horrendous experience and I hope no one else gets in her trap! Beware of the crook!
