The Menil Collection

About

A legacy of philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil, the Menil Collection houses a growing collection of art from the prehistoric to the present day. Free admission, always.

Story

Housed in the first United States building designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, the Menil’s main museum building anchors a 30-acre campus. The Menil presents regular rotations of artworks from the growing permanent collection, organizes special exhibitions and programs, publishes scholarly books, and conducts research into the conservation of modern and contemporary art. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11am to 7pm, and charges no admission fee.

I love this place! It is half the size of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, but it encompasses everything the makes a true museum/art gallery. They have art from all corners of our world to fit every mood and style. The atmosphere is exceptional. This place is perfect if you have friends or family with special needs because it is all on one level. I will definitely be coming back here! To top it off admission is free!

First things first: this is my personal favorite spot in ALL of Houston. In a city not particularly known for its art or culture, The Menil Collection stands alone in its quality and sophistication. There's such a broad range of art at The Menil Collection that I can absolutely guarantee you won't be disappointed, no matter what style you may be in the mood for. The Menil Collection has something to fit all tastes! Take a friend or family member and enjoy the art. You won't be regret it!

The art gallery takes up a whole city block. It's easy to find an easy to see from the Main Street. The building looks really cool. The grounds are large and have interesting artwork around outside. Large trees. The roads are a little bumpy around building. It was my first time here and I enjoyed it. I recommend it to anyone.

We're not allowed to take pictures and there's serious looking security guards on every corner. I can understand why. Looks small from the outside but has completely other worldly art inside. From 4th century Greek and African sculptures to Andy Warhol and Rene Magritte paintings. I had to take notes and drawings instead of pictures. It was awesome.

I don’t care if Beyonce comes here all the time, this pubes on a chair art is pathetic. I guess if you’re appreciative of Rothko’s “soul changing” solid colored canvas then you’ll probably enjoy his chapel. On the bright side it’s technically free unless you choose to make a donation.
