The Morton Arboretum

About

A 1,700 acre tree museum, with award-winning Children's Garden and Maze Garden. The Morton Arboretum is a leading center of tree science.

Story

The Morton Arboretum is a tree museum. Open 365 days a year for exploration, from 7 a.m. to sunset, we have more than one million trees from around the world, criss-crossed with 16 miles of hiking trails and nine miles of biking roads.

Mission

Trees need champions today. Their survival depends on people—people taking action to protect and preserve them. Trees filter our air and water, reduce energy use, furnish wildlife habitats, and create beauty, and they need human help to continue.

That's why The Morton Arboretum is committed to scientifically informed action, both locally and globally. It's why we champion trees through scientific study, conservation, education, and outreach. It's why we protect and plant trees in a 1,700-acre outdoor living museum, in Chicago-area communities, and around the world.

Illuminations is a great way to celebrate the season. The walk around the lake is lighted and lights are coordinated with music. The lake itself it lighted and the lights change often. It is a great destination for families as well. They coordinate arrival times to accommodate parking for which there is no charge. I highly recommend it before it closes.

I love the Morton Arboretum because they always have some kind of event year round! I highly recommend going to the illumination around the holidays! I recommend jusy about every event they have! Everything is wonderful and beautiful. It is very educational! If it is your first time going then I highly recommend getting on the tram ride and learning about the history of the living museum!!

A wonderful place. An enormous preserve with several thousand acres of grounds, a lot of which are just open fields and woods. There are lots of trails to hike and there's a road that runs around the outside of the entire grounds which you can take a scenic drive on. I work across the highway from here and looking out at it makes you feel like you're not in the suburbs of the third largest city in the U.S. The other really wonderful thing here is the children's garden, which I have visited several times with the boy I mentor. There are all kinds of interesting things to see, places to explore and fun activities for kids to do. He particularly enjoyed the stream, the pond with the stepping stones, seeing tadpoles, and the sluice with the water pumps. They also have a lot of special programs like a fantastic interactive Christmas lights display every holiday season. Definitely worth visiting and possibly even getting a membership if you think you'll want to go more than once. Membership is also reciprocal at the Chicago Botanical Garden and many other places around the U.S., if I remember correctly. There's a gift shop and a cafeteria on the grounds where you can get lunch as well.

The Morton Arboretum is one of my favorite place to go for a walk in the woods. Even though I've been there countless times I still have yet to cover the full extent of their trail network. I can definitely see the overall experience being on the pricier side with admission and food combined, but memberships of the Chicago Botanic Garden grants free admission if that option is available to you.

Amazing place to go to get back into nature -if you live in the suburbs. It takes about 10 min to drive through the East or West side. But once you find a place to explore, park your car and go on a long hike - for several miles. Trees have been planted from all over the world. This place has lots of volunteers to help tend the landscape, act as guides, or just pick up litter, if they can ever find any. Great place to visit once or to become a member and make it a regular get away.
