The Museum of Jurassic Technology

Story

The Museum of Jurassic Technology is a museum located at 9341 Venice Boulevard in the Palms district of Los Angeles, California. It was founded by David Hildebrand Wilson and Diana Drake Wilson (husband and wife) in 1988.The museum calls itself "an educational institution dedicated to the advancement of knowledge and the public appreciation of the Lower Jurassic"; the relevance of the term "Lower Jurassic" to the museum's collections is left uncertain and unexplained. The museum's collection includes a mixture of artistic, scientific, ethnographic, and historic, as well as some unclassifiable exhibits, and the diversity of its offerings evokes the cabinets of curiosities that were the 16th-century predecessors of modern natural history museums. The factual claims of many of the museum's exhibits strain credibility, provoking an array of interpretations from commentators. The museum was the subject of a 1995 book by Lawrence Weschler entitled Mr. Wilson's Cabinet of Wonder: Pronged Ants, Horned Humans, Mice on Toast, and Other Marvels of Jurassic Technology, which describes in detail many of its exhibits. David Hildebrand Wilson received a MacArthur Foundation fellowship in 2001. The museum is mentioned in the novel The Museum of Innocence, by Turkish Nobel-laureate Orhan Pamuk.

This extraordinary and unusual museum fits the description of a "cabinet of curiosities." Prepare to be unsettled by the strange exhibits, and be unsure as to what is factual and what is merely fancy. Surprises abound around every corner. The museum is best viewed with a partner or two when the museum is quieter, so I would suggest a visit on Thursday if possible. It can also get warm inside, so dress appropriately. The $8 donation for entry is well worth the hour or so you will spend, combined with complementary tea and cookies available upstairs. This is a perfect place to visit for anyone interested in an unusual exhibition of the curious.

Let's just say this place is bizarre. I had no idea if I was being trolled or if it was actually trying to be surrealist. With that being said though, the upstairs garden was amazing and the ticket comes with complementary tea and cookies. I really enjoyed listening to the accordion player upstairs while hanging out in the garden. I give a four star rating because a few of the exhibits weren't working.

Deeply weird and off the wall collection of objects and artworks on assorted themes including superstition, alchemy and ancient science. A befuddling mixture of actual historical fact and artistic invention that leaves you wondering what is real antiquity and what is artistic fancy. Not at all what you expect in LA which is another part of its charm. Didn't get to have any of the tea and cookies included in the entrance fee, because my car was on a meter. Shame as I'm sure it would have been the cherry on top of the entire surreal experience.

Very interesting.. worth the admission which for seniors is only $5. And there is complementary tea and cookies in a beautiful garden. A variety of information of the obscure.

A pleasurably disorienting experience. The museum of Jurassic Technology is surreal, strange, and indescribable. We went in with very little knowledge of what to expect and were delighted by the interesting and odd exhibits. Go here, you won't regret it, and if you don't like it, we probably wouldn't be friends anyway and in that case. I'm glad you had a bad experience because you undoubtedly suck.
