Non-profit creative reuse arts center since 1991

Story

We collect materials from over 250 industries within a 100-mile radius of The Scrap Exchange. Materials include foam, paper, fabric, zippers, buttons, test tubes, and much more. We also take in contributions from individuals. We welcome craft materials, art supplies, vintage goodies, and other unique items. The Scrap Exchange is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. As of August 16, 2014, we are operating from a NEW LOCATION! The Scrap Exchange has purchased a stand-alone building in the Shoppes at Lakewood shopping center in Durham. The new address is 2050 Chapel Hill Road, Durham, 27707. The site offers 2.4 acres of land and a 23,000 square foot building that will help us grow our reuse mission.

You can find the following specialty departments in our retail store. (Please note that since our materials are donated from a wide variety of sources, inventory changes daily!)

Vintage Village
Vintage, antique, collectible or otherwise uber-cool – you’ll find it in our Vintage Village.

Blue Barrel Zone
Fill a bag with an assortment of materials from our iconic blue barrels.

Crafts
Need craft supplies? Our prices are 50%-75% less than craft stores. Find craft books, scrapbook supplies, rubber stamps, beads, craft paint, art supplies, kids crafts, floral supplies and more.

Containers
Need a container or vessel? We have a wide variety of container options including plastic containers, cardboard boxes, gift boxes, glass jars, wood boxes, wicker baskets, tins, and a whole lot more.

Paper
New paper, scrap paper, reclaimed paper, mostly priced at $1 per pound. Some specialty paper may be priced differently. Paper types include wallpaper, paper samples, office paper, sticker paper, rolls of paper, vinyl paper, and more.

Office Supplies
Set up your office or get ready for school with paper, envelopes, manilla folders, desk organizers and more. Our best value? 3-ring binders are 25 cents every day, regardless of size.

Sewing and Fabric
Amazing deals on sewing notions, thread, zippers, yarn, ribbons and trims, fabric by the yard, fabric remnants, fabric scraps, fabric samples, and more! Most fabric priced between $1 and $3 per yard. Fill a bag with scraps and samples for one low price.

AV and Electronics
Always an unusual assortment of used vinyl record albums, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, as well as the equipment to play them on.

Mongo Zone
If it can’t go anywhere else, it usually ends up in our Mongo Zone, where you can find wood, tile, metal, household, packaging materials, foam, glass, windows, doors, bulk materials, and some things we just can’t describe.

Clothing Zone
Clothing for all, accessories, handbags more!

Science Zone
Lab glass, pipettes, microscopes, magnetic stirrers and more... Donated from manufacturers and labs.
