Free admission every Wednesday! The staff are genuinely nice and helpful. At the reception, they'll give you a self-guide booklet to help you better appreciate the three-story Dutch house, the generations of the Van Cortlandt family that called it home, its furnishings, and its historic significance. My visit lasted an hour.

George Washington slept here. Yes he did. A pre revolutionary war stone house. Maintained with period furnishings. Since it is a house, not a big museum, you can go through a self-tour relatively fast, while viewing all the rooms and the building itself. During the seasons, there's a herb garden outside, which hosted a friendly visiting deer for a while 15 years ago. And if you have to travel to get there, you are traveling to a park almost as large os Central Park, mostly without the crowds.

5 stars for architecture and history. This mansion has withstood the test of time and had a huge important 9lace in American history as George Washington led his troops out from here into New York City (The Bronx didn't exist back then and was a part of Westchester County until the 19th century) and this was considered the final act of the American Revolution. This is also the site if many events including barefoot dancing in the park.
