If you are considering putting a family member in Astoria, in the Village of Vienna Square, plan on being there daily to constantly monitor their care. The lack of empathy and attention to detail is staggering. Every day will be a challenge to insure the well-being and basic requirements of your loved ones are being met. I have witnessed first-hand that many of the nursing caregivers and assistants will do as little as possible to attend to the fundamental needs of patients. I have yet to determine if this is due to the lack of training, incompetence, apathy, or down right negligence. It is depressing and heart wrenching to walk in and see elderly lifeless souls in wheelchairs strewed throughout hallways and sitting areas. Many will sit for hours staring off in the distance with a glazed thousand yard stare. Apparently management is a factor as it seems there are no checks and balances to insure quality and proper treatment. I have voiced my concerns and grievances to those in charge. Some were resolved and some were not. If you have the opportunity to meet with the executive director, be prepared to interact with a person who lacks compassion and will give you the callous attitude letting you know that she is in charge. The only bright side to having someone in this facility, is the Physical and Occupational Therapists. They are without a doubt, the most patient, compassionate, caring, group of people I have ever met. I have watch them for four weeks and found it amazing to see the empathy and sympathy they have. The Director of the Rehabilitation Department should be very proud of each and every member of her team.

Why isn’t there a negative star rating? Anyways, when you go visit a loved one and you find out: 1) The staff had failed to change or even take notice of a wound bandage left on for weeks. 2) The neglect is blamed on the mysterious doctor. 3) There is a mythical doctor that roams the hallways ever so often that if you listen hard enough, you’ll hear his footsteps. But that’s just rumors. 4) The driver will leave your loved one sitting outside for eons and then tell them they missed their doctors appointment. 5) Their mode of transportation, from the picture, is a broken down van that’s missing lights, probably power steering, and maybe brakes. 6) If you find the DON or director, challenge their authority by offering to bring gauze and essential items, then they’ll berate you and say you have no influence on how poorly the place is ran. 7) Microwaves are also a myth. There’s a very pristine oven and stove top though. I’m sure grandpa who just had hip surgery is gonna get up and cook himself a frickin omelet. 8) Blood thinners thin your blood (mind blown). These nincompoops gave grandpa some more blood thinners, as he’s trying to recover from surgery. But it was “doctors” orders. Wherever and whatever he is. If you want revenge on your loved one, send them here to fester as they listen to “I’ll be home for Christmas” as they become more depressed.

My aunt has been transferred there twice and both times ended back in the hospital. Once with neomonia. They don't give her her meds and no doctor has visited her. If it weren't for her husband being there most of the day she wouldn't get her meds or get a bath.

My mother came in for a 2 week stay. The very first day we had problems. They were horrible about giving my mother her pain meds. They insisted it had to be 11 and 5, not according to the hours my mother had been taking it and would litteraly go hours and hours without it, she was in excruciating pain and they just thought she just wanted pain meds, like she was an addict or something. The nurse so much as insinuated it to me.. They would even forget to give it to her and my mother couldn't get anyone's attention. One day I came to visit and had to get my mother out of the bathroom and back in bed. Come to find out the CNA went on break and left her in the bathroom, NICE. Thank god I came in when I did. Another day I visitef a lady in a wheel chair came down the hall yelling is anyone around?? I thought she might be a patient with mental issues but she wasn't. Just a poor women needing assistance and nobody came to her room. The list actually keeps going, but I just hit on some of the more serious issues. Word of advice, I know it says 4stars on the rating of this place but ITS NOT. NEVER SEND YOUR LOVE ONE THERE. HORRIBLE PLACE. Staff is very indifferent to any of the patience needs. I just couldn't believe what I've witnessed.

My grandmother had back surgery and was transfered to this home. She was scheduled for 2 weeks to do rehabilitation. She hasnt been there 1 day and already has issues. No one assist her to go to the bathroom. They did not offer a wheelchair nor walker to get back and forth to the bathroom. They didnt provide her medication in a timely manner. She called for assistance numerous times to use the bathroom and was sent a male to assist her. He didnt help her up, didnt help her sit. Mind you she has just gotten out of back surgery. They left her for 30 minutes in the bathroom even though she repeatedly pressed the nurse button. She finally decides to get up on her own. When she makes it out the door. She finds the nurse laying on the couch RECLINED, with the pillow over his face. This nurse fell ASLEEP on the job when he was suppose to be assisting an elderly woman that just got transfered from back surgery. I honestly dont recommend this place. It may have just been the night shift that is careless. But these nurses are getting paid to take care of the elderly and are actually falling asleep on the job.
