The Waters Edge Lighthouse

About

The Watersedge Lighthouse is a fine restaurant ideal for outdoor seating in the summer time, beautiful events, and great food all the time.

Story

The Waters Edge Lighthouse is the oldest existing building in Glenville, NY. It had been formerly known as The River House, Little Richard's Tavern, and for 105 years before that, it was a farmhouse privately owned by the Seeley Family.

In the early 1700s the land was owned by Johannes Van Epps, later sold to Volney Freeman, the same person who built Freeman's Bridge in 1885. Descendents of the Seeley Family, originally from Germany, have lived at the residence from 1851 - 1956. The Greek revival farmhouse dates from the 30 year period in the 19th century when Schenectady County produced a large portion of the nation's brooms. Broom corn was grown on the Mohawk River flats, cured and made into brooms by the workers who lived on the Seeley farm. Town records show that members of the Seeley family held town of Glenville offices in the years 1898 through 1909.

In 1956 Mr. and Mrs. A. George Murray purchased the Seeley farm, a 22 room house with no indoor plumbing, running water, electricity, or heat. They renovated the house room by room and eventually included Little Richard's Tavern.

Because of its unique architecture for this area, the house was registered in the State Historic Sites Survey and was nominated for the National Register of Historical Places. The house showed elements of Georgian, Federalist and Greek revival architecture. This combination implies that the house was built during a transitional period because it does not follow the Dutch style common here for those times.

And in 2005, the Popolizio Family purchased this historic building and has renovated it once again, The Waters Edge Lighthouse on the Mohawk River. We are so proud and happy that you can share in the excitement of this new restaurant and inn with us and welcome you to dine and enjoy.

Ambiance was great. Food was cooked to perfection. I would have rated it 5 star except for we had a hour wait between appetizers and dinner. They did apologize and give us free desserts.

Long wait when we made a reservation, long wait for appetizers, although the appetizers were good! Then it was over two hours before our main course came out and a lot of the food was burned. I had to leave before my food came out. That being said, the waitress did her best and comped what needed to be comped. But the chef and kitchen staff is the obvious problem burning many meals. Although the wait staff could be better at being out there ready for their table's needs. The atmosphere is also loud and there are too many tables in a small space. The manager tried their best though. This was on a Wednesday.

Here from Florida, wanting to enjoy a nice lunch on the water. Asked hostess for a different table, she declined me rudely leaving me at a table with no wind on this hot day. Our server was nice enough but very slow (seems to have too many tables at a time) and each time we needed her attention or a drink we waited 10+ minutes. Our food was 30+ mins for simple entrees. Dessert was at the table for 5 minutes without silverware. I ate with a knife. Beautiful spot on the water too bad the hospitality wasn't all there.

If you love to enjoy the summer weather by eating outside on a beautiful patio this is your place!! Great restaurant for cocktails and apps or dinner, food is always delicious. Awesome bar area and right on the Mohawk river so you can enjoy watching all the boats go by, or launch your own boat at the public launch. I always have a great time there you will too!!!

Two words about this restaurant EXPLOSIVE DIARRHEA Two hours after our party left everybody in our party was sick. Contacted the restaurant the next day and they did absolutely nothing. They actually had an attitude. The health department has been in there several times RUN To the bathroom as fast as you can before it’s too late
