Nice all day hike trip to the top of Mt Timpanogos

Amazing hike...but not for the faint of heart. It's a stunning hike, and the views at the top are breath taking. Well worth it...but do some training before conquering the summit.

One of my favorite hikes. Even though it's slightly longer than the Aspen Grove Trailhead, Timpooneke is less steep. The variation in terrain and plant-life keeps the entire trip interesting. Assuming an average pace, a hiker can make Mount Timpanogos peak in around 3-4 hours. Starting from the Timpooneke trailhead, you hike through trees for about an hour until you get to a meadow with dense trees and a flat rock plateau. From there, the trees are mainly coniferous and you cross a couple of rock fields. In June and sometimes July, you will also pass by several small waterfalls that cross the trail. After about the second hour, you will arrive at the Great Basin, a huge open meadow that gives you a spectacular view of the backside of the Saddle and summit. Once you've passed the turnoff to the toilet (which was destroyed the last time I was there), you will get to an intersection. Keep to the right and climb up to the Saddle. This will avoid the massive rock field beneath the mountain wall (which is difficult to cliimb), unless you want to go to Emerald Lake and back down the Aspen Grove trail. If you want to go to the peak, climb the trail to the Saddle (about another hour). At the Saddle, you will be able to look down into Utah Valley (and even see part of Salt Lake County and back into the mountain range. From here, the air starts to get thin and there isn't much vegetation (although if you go early enough, the incredible wildflowers are in bloom). You can reach the peak in about another hour. There is one spot that is a bit tricky because you have to climb through a narrow, steep crevasse, but other than that, it's not too bad. At the peak, you can see down into Emerald Lake in addition to having a better view all around. There is a small forest service shack on top in which a log book can record your accomplishment. The total round-trip effort is about 14 miles. Bring lots of water unless you have a filter and you are hiking before August when it tends to be very dry.
