About

Touro Synagogue is a place of expansive thought, transformative prayer, fearless engagement, and love.

Story

New Orleans is a city like no other, and Touro Synagogue is a Jewish community like no other. Touro Synagogue offers an historically fascinating, yet very contemporary approach to Jewish life – right in the center of Uptown New Orleans. The flavor of this city is expressed in the people, the architecture, the food, the music, the live oak trees – and those are just the beginning. The texture of the city and the synagogue are interwoven with one another. We invite you to become a part of this community.

If I lived here, I would join this congregation. We were on vacation in New Orleans and decided to call to request a tour of the synagogue. Two days later, we received a call. Rita (I am embarrassed to say I never got her last name) took us on a great tour of the shul. Nice people, very liberal philosophy. Clearly a vibrant community. The place is beautiful. We left feeling we had made new friends. So glad we called. If anyone from Touro reads this, you must contact me if you come to the Philadelphia area. I would like to return the kindness shown us.

I can't believe I'm writing a negative review for a synagogue. I went to this synagogue once a week while a student at Tulane. Nice people, nice crowd. I didn't go more often because it tended toward the very old, middle-aged, and very young (children) crowd-- the college students tended to frequent Hillel and Chabad. But the rabbi. I'm planning to make aliyah in the near future and since moving from New Orleans have not been active in congregations, instead choosing to make do with on-campus resources as available. I live a Jewish life and am getting a PhD in Jewish Studies, and want to become an Israeli citizen, as I will be moving to Jerusalem for the last few years of my PhD. However when I asked the rabbi for a letter affirming my father's Jewish heritage (and I offered to provide proof) she refused. First she claimed that a Jewish father didn't qualify me to become a citizen of Israel under the Law of the Return (this is plain wrong, and I have a hard time believing a rabbi wouldn't know the details of the Law of the Return), then she said she wouldn't help me with the process of aliyah because she disagreed with Israeli policy, then, finally, she said she was uncomfortable with writing my a letter because she didn't remember me personally and suggested that the fact that I am not active in a synagogue (as opposed to an on-campus group like Hillel) would and should make the processing of moving to Israel difficult. She refused to speak with me on the phone. This was a woman I saw hundreds of times between the ages of 18-22 and once met with me personally. I really don't know what the real reason is. I get that people are complicated. But as a woman who looked up to a female rabbi as a role model for four years and have such fond memories of Touro, I am so, so disappointed about this. I really wish I hadn't asked, but it retroactively soured all of my warm experiences. In the meantime, I contacted a local Chabad house who (ironically?) was more than happy to write a letter affirming that my father is a Jew, and I am Israel bound.

Warm, welcoming place; whenever I am in NOLA, I make a beeline for Touro. Fabulous rabbi, great staff. Torah study is lively and challenging!
